Newcastle baffled by Crystal Palace claims and ‘£65m bid’ – Intriguing Guehi update

Some intriguing claims have emerged from The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards on Newcastle United’s ongoing pursuit of Marc Guehi.

The North East reporter states that Newcastle are adamant they have not yet been told by Crystal Palace that our latest bid has been rejected for the centre-back.

Last week, it was initially reported that we’d offered a £65m package for the 24-year-old, but The Mail’s Craig Hope and Sami Mokbel state that the offer of £60m + £5m in add-ons was rejected by Palace. However, Edwards states that club officials on Tyneside are yet to be told that, with the Toon chiefs also ‘mystified’ by talk of ‘multiple bids’ being made and rejected the previous week.

There’s no doubt that we’re keen and in talks to strike a deal, but something is off here. Are Palace leaking ‘bids’ to the press? Who knows, but it’s all a bit odd, especially when Eagles’ co-owner is doing so many interviews to seemingly drum up interest in Guehi, making it very clear that he’s available if a certain price is met.

Edwards reports that talks between Paul Mitchell and Palace will continue this week, insisting Newcastle have not yet walked away, but it’s believed we will move on to other targets and drop our interest if there’s no progress in the coming days.

Luke Edwards on X: ‘I’m led to believe that Newcastle have not been told by Crystal Palace that their latest bid for Marc Guehi has been rejected. Also mystified by talk of multiple bids being made and rejected last week. Talks are set to continue and Newcastle have not walked away at this stage. But they will do if no progress this week.’

  1. It’s obvious to me that Palace are trying to push up the price by going public with these phantom bids. We on the other hand have done things the right way keep silent. We will get him and I bet it will be cheaper than 65 mill keep our nerve and it’s done.
