Earlier this afternoon, we reported on links to Olympiacos midfielder Santiago Hezze, with Argentinian journalist Gaston Edul claiming that we were considering a bid for the 22-year-old.
A few hours later, the Greek media report that we’re preparing to launch a formal bid for the highly-rated holding midfielder who helped Olympiacos win the Europa Conference League last season.
According to Giannis Chorianopoulos – the Editor in Chief at Greek outlet Sportime – Newcastle are ‘about to offer more than €20m’ for the Argentinian talent.
It would be a surprise if we brought in a midfielder, with most of the focus on a centre-back and right-winger. However, Bruno Guimaraes is our only natural ‘no.6′ in our squad and we may also be planning for the future with Sean Longstaff our of contract next summer?
Hezze represented Argentina at this summer’s Olympics and played a key role in Olympiacos’ route to Europa Conference League glory last season, scoring in their 4-2 win at Aston Villa in May.

When was launching a bid for a team’s key players, with 8 days of the transfer window left ever a successful tactic?
“Yeah no problem, just take him – we don’t need a holding midfielder this season, we’ve won all we want to win this decade!”
