Howe delivers harsh truth for Saudi owners after dismal end to summer window

Eddie Howe insists that it may take another 10 years for Newcastle United to get close to PIF’s big ambitions for the football club after a tough summer transfer window ended with no major first-team signings.

The boss insists that “the dream” of taking Newcastle to the top is still alive, but he feels it will take “a lot, lot longer” to achieve due to FFP and PSR as he urged the club to build our revenue streams, bring more money in the club – through player sales or sponsorship – to maximise our spending power moving forwards.

“I don’t think the dream dies, necessarily, but I think it takes a lot longer. We’ve got to build our revenue streams, that is the biggest thing. We’ve got to bring more money into the football club however we do that, through player sales, through sponsorship, through loads of various things.

“That’s the big thing that we need to focus on now for the next, probably, 10 years. Whether I’m lucky enough to see any of that, who knows? But the dream is not over, it’s just going to take a lot, lot longer.”

Howe then reflected on the window and our failure to land a right-winger or striker, insisting it hasn’t been for the want of trying despite it ending in disappointment.

“I’m not going to sit here and say it’s been a brilliant transfer window for us. I think everyone will look at me and think, ‘I’m not sure he’s telling the truth there’. I do try as far as I can to tell the truth,” he said.

“But it’s not been through the want of trying from anybody’s perspective and I think for me to sit here and say that would be totally wrong as well. Everyone has tried really, really hard to improve the squad to make sure we’ve got a chance of success.”

  1. They can try as hard as they like, if they have no idea what they’re doing then trying isn’t going to get them far. It seems our board have no idea what they’re doing. West Ham, Fulham and Crystal Palace have all signed players that would’ve improved our first team at prices we could’ve very much afforded. What on earth was Mitchell doing while the likes of Kilman, Anderson, Lacroix and Todibo were available?! Oh yeah, trying to spend every penny we had on Marc Guehi, who was clearly not for sale. How could I forget.

  2. I think I’ve seen it all after this transfer window. We need a top right winger , what do we do we sell Minteh now playing for Brighton first team, and made Man U look bad last week . There were a lot of players in other positions who could of been sold before Minteh

  3. Seriously I think the board should take a long hard look at Darren Eales and Paul Mitchell who have acted like amateurs in this process and this follows on the frantic events which led to the sale of Mintah and Anderson. In this episode Eales was rumoured to have approached LiVARpool about the sale of Antony Gordon and caused Gordon to consider going back to Liverpool. Mintah is smashing it in the PL and we sold the right winger that we desperately wanted and still dont have one!

Also I heard that Amanda wanted Maldini as Director of Football and no comparison between him and Mitchell! If the Saudi’s are interested in making NUFC great please consider Eales and Mitchells roles as this is just not good enough!

  4. No getting away from it, however you look at it, Paul Mitchell is scoring exactly 0/10 so far.

  5. As soon as we knew Palace had sold their other CB it was time to walk away, in fact, as soon as the numbers got higher than £32m ( his transfermarket valuation) we should have at least been approaching alternatives

  6. I think we will find out before January that we are lucky to have walked away, we will get a decent cb in January imho, more than likely from abroad for a lot less than Guehi.
I was more worried about the rw situation but maybe the fact Barnes and Gordon can interchange may suffice, Miggy and Murphy as backups, Tonali back and hopefully not too long for Willock, tho vs aren’t all rosy in the garden but we are by all means not dead in the water imho

  7. Howe’s statement about the process taking 10 years almost guarantees we lose Isak, Bruno, Botman and Gordon sooner rather than later. They don’t have 10 years to wait for us to become a top side. I’d even throw Tonali in that mix if he has a good season. Maybe even Livramento if he kicks on this season. The future looks bright…..

Ever thought that the players you just mentioned could have been proposed to Howe and he said no. As for Guehi it’s obvious that he was Eddies no.1 target
No one knows the facts outside of the Club so pointless getting angry at made up scenarios
Yes the window was rubbish yes we are no further forward but we haven’t taken a backward step like some of our fans are making out and the way some are acting they forget where we were not that long ago. The over the top reactions are ridiculous and do nothing for the sensible people that have a genuine gripe. This is not aimed at you btw apart from the first sentence.

  9. Ian,
Eddie’s statement makes it very clear he is on the way out, never mind the players!

  10. The egos at the top forced out Amanda Staveley. She was a very astute negotiator and the very human face of Newcastle United. Since she left we’ve had by far our worst transfer window since the takeover. Coincidence? I don’t think so!

Joe agree with you here that’s why I’ve mentioned Craig Hope’s piece from the mail hopefully Olly will put it on the blog so it can be hopefully debated constructively

  12. The Saudi Owners are not popular to say the least and I think there’s a
Situation within the Premier League clubs to do NUFC no favours whatsoever giving lipservice with deals and any other grace or favour.

  13. Joe,
Fine player and manager as you were, I don’t think you’ve read Amanda’s position correctly. The Saudis sacked her because of her hands-on management of the disastrous position at the end of June, which had been forseeable for at least six months. Anybody who causes NUFC to sell two superb young talents is definitely incompetent. No question whatsoever. That is unchallengeable.

  14. Definitely a poor transfer window. However, I’ve watch Minteh twice now and he is nothing special it seems. Definitely not a major loss. Same with Anderson. It would be nice to have both on our books but it is not the end of the world.
On Amanda and her hubby. They don’t have the coin to keep up thier share in the club. It is nothing sinister imo. They simply don’t have the financial clout to keep pumping money in.
Our our pursuit of Gruehi is baffling. Why we would hedge our bets on him is beyond me. Absolutely bottled that effort.
Only time will tell in regards to how damaging the lack of signings will be.. hope we don’t get a bunch of injuries..

  15. Malcolm,
You are completely correct. NUFC are the number 1 hate figure within the Premier League. And they’re right to be worried about what we will achieve. Ultimately the Saudi colossal wealth will come to bear, look out everybody else! In the meanwhile, they’re all doing their very best to delay the inevitable.

  16. We need Amanda back and Eales and Michell gone. Nothing has happened in this window.
Why do we have so many goalkeepers except Trafford?
A complete farce of a window.

      (Quote)

  17. The only good thing with the window was not wasting £70M on Guehi . He is not worth that and cheaper alternatives are available leaving money for a winger and other players. If we want Guehi he will have less left on his contract so available later for much less money.

  18. Once the new stadium is built (and it will be a new stadium) the revenue will increase and Newcastle will march forward we still need sponsors for our training tops our training ground and whatever else we can get sponsors for I believe it all hangs on the Man City result of the trial

  19. I can’t believe I’m still reading this theory that PL clubs won’t do business with us.

Instead of obviously listing the players we have brought from other PL clubs – instead I will point out that it was 2 PL clubs that saved us from PSR penalisation this summer 🤷🏼‍♂️🙄.

  20. Ah, Sharpy, be careful.
You are completely correct to point out 2 Premier clubs bought our future stars. Where you went wrong is overstating the case against you : you have attacked a straw man. Nobody, anywhere, ever, has said (to quote you) “PL clubs won’t do business with us”

  21. Howe needs to go.. that’s a damning indictment .. villa are in the same position as Newcastle and Emery won’t be saying things like ten years .. he will destroy our season no ambition and de moralising the players and the club .. he is the centre of a rot that could take hold .. get a top coach in with European experience and has won trophies ..

      (Quote)

  22. Dave Wally .. Amanda was not sacked she left as planned a year before .. Newcastle are not number 1 hate figure ,, city Chelsea Man Utd and Arsenal are far more disliked for various reasons .. Anderson and minteh were sold and at a great profit .. neither are pulling up trees and none were interested by big clubs .. try to understand what your talking about before posting 🤡

      (Quote)

  23. A tad rash, Mike. It’s showing great insight to claim neither are pulling up tress after, what is it, 3 whole matches? Sheesh.

  24. I wonder how this window would have went if the England job wasn’t up for grabs

  25. …….and correct, Mike.
We’re both fans, we’re on the same side, I’m perfectly happy to be corrected if you can show evidence (a) somebody (but certainly not me) ever said this and (b) prior evidence that Amanda’s exit was “pre-planned”. Really?

  26. We were on the wrong side of June 30. In order to get players in we need to be taking advantage of that PSR deadline and buying players at that moment. We were on the wrong side of it this season and had to sell. Hopefully, if a dead transfer window is what it takes to be on the right side of it in future, then I will be happy with that.

  27. We will need some luck this season in the areas we should have strengthened if we have injuries or a lack of discipline with red cards etc.
We have lost the opportunity to get rid of Wilson and Almiron for decent cash unless the Saudi’s come shopping in January we may get lucky and strengthen then if Eales and Mitchell pull their finger out. If they are still here.

  28. The situation here is we are back in the Westwood and Ashley era’s same scenario…Amanda and hubby had a great relationship with the fans …open and honest…it’s like a closed shop now.
    Just my opinion
