We are now two games into the Premier League season and Newcastle United hasn’t started badly, but I feel it’s also fair to say That The Toon hasn’t quite lit up the world with their performances in the opening fixtures. Of course, it is still early days yet, and it can take time for the squad to find its rhythm after the summer break so please don’t think I’m being too hard on the lads. Four points from games against Premier League new boys Southampton and a Bournemouth side that is tricky to beat on their home patch is about what could be expected, but if the club want to kick on and get into those Champions League places next season they will need to turn some of these draws away from home into victories.
Our lot here at NUFC blog have been doing some digging and we are going to look at how The Toon may fare this season in a few key areas according to the bookmakers. We are hoping using their expert opinion sprinkled in with some of our own knowledge about the club will lead to some interesting and hopefully pretty accurate predictions.
Can Newcastle United Win The Premier League?
The Short answer here is probably not no, so let’s rip that band-aid off quickly and get into why not. Currently, according to Bet365 the likelihood of Newcastle United going all the way and lifting the trophy at the end of the season is 33/1. This pretty good odds If you are feeling confident of course you could use a Bet 365 bonus to improve these odds as well. Leicester City did win the league once a year after nearly being relegated as we all know so stranger things have happened.
Personally, though I think winning the league is a bridge too far this season. Lifting the title is definitely something that I feel the club should be building towards but currently other teams in the division have too much quality. Manchester City and Arsenal have much stronger squads this season, and Liverpool still looks like a decent outfit under new coach Arne Slot. This season needs to be about getting back into Europe and building from there, which leads us to our next point.
Will Newcastle Qualify For The Champions League?
Now this is a goal that I feel is achievable for the club and should be the main aim of this campaign. The Toon are currently 3/1 with bookmakers so obviously the sentiment that this is possible is widely held by a lot of people who know what they are talking about.
As a club we would need a bit of luck to pull this off as Villa, Tottenham and Chelsea will all be vying for that extra spot in the top 4, but with the quality we have upfront and midfield I think this year we may well creep back in and hear that glorious champions league music ringing around St James’ Park once again.
If Isak has another good season and the defence tightens up a little more we will be well on our way to achieving this goal. I personally think we are in for a fantastic season this time around even if the title is still a little out of reach for now (but not forever), howay the lads!
