Paul Merson fears for Marc Guehi, aims dig at Palace and predicts Newcastle vs Spurs

Paul Merson has praised Crystal Palace’s determination to keep Marc Guehi at the club, but fears his failed move to Newcastle will “knock him” in the months ahead.

The former Arsenal man feels Palace “dug their heels in as a small club” – which feels like a bit of a dig in itself – and have ensured they won’t go down after keeping a hold of their £70m-rated captain.

Speaking on Sky Sports on deadline day, Merson said: “Fair play to Crystal Palace, they’ve dug their heels in as a small club, no disrespect to them.

“I’m a big fan of [Marc] Guehi, he keeps you in the Premier League. Staying in the Premier League is worth another £100m or 150m. But how does the lad react now? It’s a big couple of months for him as this will knock him sideways.”

Merson then had this to say in his latest prediction piece for Sportskeeda: “Tottenham had a brilliant result when they beat Everton 4-0 last weekend. But I’m backing Newcastle to win this one.

“This is a real test for Spurs, especially considering they’re playing away from home. The fans at St James’ Park will definitely be up for this game. It’ll be a different atmosphere there on Sunday.

“Tottenham have a lot to lose here and if they come out of this test unscathed, it’ll be a huge positive for them. That second-half performance against Leicester did not really impress me and that is exactly why I feel Newcastle could beat them in this clash.”

  1. The only loser in this is Palace.

NUFC still have £70m in the bank, but they will NEVER be offered that much for the lad again. If they are lucky they’ll get an off for half that before his contract runs down – or, very possibly he leaves for nothing.
