Gary Neville has given his verdict on Newcastle United’s transfer business in the last couple of months and taken a swipe at PSR for restricting a number of Premier League clubs.
Newcastle fans and Eddie Howe especially were left disappointed as deadline day passed having failed to secure a major signing when we probably needed at least another centre back and a right winger.
This was after losing two exciting young talents in Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, and Neville now claims that we are at a tricky ‘crossroads’ after spending well in the last three years.
The former Man United defender isn’t happy with the way PSR is encouraging clubs to sell their best academy players, adding that something must change with the financial rules.
Neville also claimed that Newcastle are being held back by the Premier League and that we should be allowed to compete financially with the very best in the league without these restrictions.
Gary Neville on our transfer approach under PIF and poor summer: “I think what they’ve done in those first couple of years is build a really good foundation and I think we’ve all said that they’ve done it really well.
“We expected them to be a bit flamboyant, maybe a bit eccentric we’ve seen why Chelsea have done with all that money. Newcastle have been measured and I think done a really good job.
“Just listening to Eddie in his interview I would suggest that he feels disappointed with what’s happened in the last few months and you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work out that he should be disappointed because they should have got better players for him having lost the players they’ve lost.
“I think that now it’s on that crossroads moment that was always going to come a couple of years in with what do you do next, how do you then take it to the next level, how do you support Howe to where he needs to get to. It’s a very challenging moment they’re about to embark upon.”
Neville on our PSR situation: “PSR was never designed so the teams have to sell their best academy players. Something needs to change dramatically in the next 12 months.
“Also, Newcastle should be able to invest in the squad, so they can get to the level of Manchester City and other clubs. We can’t just keep a thumb on clubs heads and say you’re not going to invest. We can’t keep Newcastle back and we’re holding them back in this moment.”
Exactly right, but the only way it can change is if the 14 non septic 6 get together and fight the premier league as a unit. Player costs have escalated beyond all recognition over recent years but this rule has not changed to allow for it. More and more teams will need to sell their best prospects or face points deductions all to protect the status quo of the septic 6.

He’s talking about deregulation , which is a bad, bad idea imo.
You don’t have to join too many dots to see he’s not talking about benefit to a United starting with Newcastle, so caution is required before jumping on Neville’s bandwagon. He’s no more than a PR mouthpiece for ratcliffe here and obfuscating the real agenda. .
PSR has lost its way without doubt by being bastardised beyond any good intent it started with by PL clubs.
Deregulation is not a competitive answer to PSR and will only establish a cartel .. it might be a different cartel, but it’ll exist
