Newcastle ‘almost certain’ to make new Marc Guehi move – but could face competition

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle look set to reignite their interest in Marc Guehi in the January transfer window – but they may face fresh competition for his signature this winter.

Luke Edwards reports that we are ‘almost certain’ to return for the Crystal Palace centre-back in January, revealing that Paul Mitchell was a key driver behind our continued pursuit of the 24-year-old, insisting it wasn’t just Howe who was keen to land the Eagles captain.

He adds that there’ll be ‘money to spend’ in the New Year after the club have failed to bring in any major signings over the two transfer windows in 2024, but there could also be Premier League competition vying for Guehi’s signature.

TalkSPORT’s chief reporter Alex Crook claims that Liverpool and Chelsea are keeping a close eye on Guehi’s situation, with the defender not only impressing at this summer’s European Championships but approaching the final 18 months of his contract at Selhurst Park.

So, while Palace may be forced to lower their £70-75m demands in January if they wish to land a big fee for their centre-back, we may have to fend off competition for his signature should we revisit a deal.

  1. We won’t get him in January either, if any of the London clubs or top 6 come sniffing he will go to one of them no matter what the price.
As a club we have wasted enough energy on him already.

  2. Recent experience shows that when the cartel get involved, nufc are likely to lose out.
Tinfoil alert 🤔.. I wonder if they were in quiet conversation with palace this summer to achieve the outcome we witnessed. If so, we won’t hear anything but applause from the cartel biased media.

I get what the club were trying to do in pursuing guehi and don’t for an instant believe the flawed narrative that it was guehi or no-one but that deal imo is unlikely this winter.
Any move will be complicated by the return of botman and how he recovers but they do need competition / replacement for schar at least and judging by Howe’s comments over the summer he is ( correctly imo) prioritising defence

  3. The heading says we are likely to buy him in January with money to spend in 2025.

All sounds a bit dodgy. The PSR year runs June to June, so surely any money we will have to spend in January we had available this summer?
