“Very soon” – Good news for Eddie Howe as Paul Mitchell offers injury update

Paul Mitchell has issued a positive update on Joe Willock’s injury status, revealing that the midfielder will be back “very soon.”

Eddie Howe said last Friday that the early signs suggested he hadn’t suffered a “serious injury” after his first scan showed some damage to his thigh, but was reluctant to say too much until the results came back from further assessment.

A week later, following his chat with the local media at St James’ Park on Wednesday, our sporting director said “he’ll back very soon” when asked for an update on the 25-year-old’s fitness, suggesting the latest scan cam back positive.

“Joe Willock – I know he got injured against Forest, but we all saw what he can bring to this team,” Mitchell told the Shields Gazette. “He’ll be back very soon.”

It remains to be seen exactly when he’ll return, but this offers genuine hope that he’ll be back shortly after the international break.

We face Wolves a week on Sunday – a game that may come too soon for Willock – before travelling to Fulham on Saturday 21st September, with our Carabao Cup trip to Wimbledon coming next on Tuesday 24th September.

  1. Ive only seen written updates on the interview. Hopefully it was televised and we’ll get to watch it too.
Anyways points for me that stand out
Standard guff about developing a new team and the challenges in a tough working environment with a budget that is limited and less than competitors while inheriting a less than ideal framework from his predecessor. Fair enough but it’ll wear thin quickly if he tries it again.

Mitchell talks about squad while Howe talks about the first team. That’s a difference that could mean unresolved tension.

Both Howe and Mitchell implied they weren’t in control so at least one of them is being less than candid (probably both). I think that difference is at least in part that this interview was managed by nufc while Howe’s are less choreographed. Conclusion more unresolved tension. They need to tighten their words to show better unity and Sort their 5h1t in private not public. I do like the positive conflict benefits he referenced.

I like the Newcastle tax reference which imo remains a real thing.

I come out of it thinking good for him for fronting up and not dodging questions (too much😁) and it seems he’s in charge. I conclude Howe works to him and states types of players with the scouts offering ideas back on who they are.

I still believe Howe is the best manager ( or is it coach ??) nufc can get right now as the club are not competitive enough yet to attract an elite options. Howe can do better than nufc. Should he carry the can for the lack of progress against some real obstacles for the club this summer nufc may regret it
