Anthony Gordon breaks silence on difficult summer after bizarre Southgate snub

Anthony Gordon has admitted that he was ‘disappointed’ to play just five minutes of England’s Euro 2024 campaign and reveals that he received no explanation from former boss Gareth Southgate.

Gordon was coming off the back of his best season to date with 11 goals in the Premier League, along with some impressive displays in Champions League and goals against all of the ‘big six’ sides.

That rightly earned him a call-up to the national team ahead of the competition and he felt, in his words, “unstoppable” heading into the tournament. However, despite England making the final, they had struggled throughout to gel in attack and things looked stale up front, with many supporters calling for Gordon to feature more.

Speaking to ITV about his tough summer and lack of minutes at the Euros, Gordon had this to say ahead of England’s Nations League clash with Ireland tonight:

On his game time at the Euros, Gordon said: “I was disappointed just because I believe in myself so much and I feel unstoppable especially at that point in the season. I felt like no one could defend me, could deal with me over 90 minutes.

“I felt like I was ready to go and impress people and help the country win the trophy. So from what I envisioned to what it was, it was disappointing.”

Asked what Southgate said to him regarding his lack of minutes, Gordon added: “Nothing really. I didn’t really ask. Like I’ve said plenty of times I’m not really that type of guy, I just like to get on with what I’ve got to do.

“Like I said I believed in myself so even from the bench I was thinking if he brings me on I’m going to be ready. But it didn’t happen.

Ultimately, Southgate stuck to what he knew and neglected Gordon, who made just one cameo against Slovenia in the group stage, leaving the winger frustrated and in the dark over his lack of minutes.

  1. Southgate was terrible a tactical and strategic disaster ., the players won the easy games themselves but as soon as they needed management against top teams he was clueless .. a joke of a manager but good at taking the knee and a nice selection of waist coats .. good riddance .. hopefully Anthony will get a fair go of it now ..though carsley looks like another dkhead

  2. Mike,
I think you’ll find Carsley is all over our boy. He’ll be one of the first names on his teamsheet for as long as he’s in charge – you couldn’t get LESS of the same compared with previous (mis-)management.
