Newcastle considering cut-price move for Lille star – Report

According to a new report, Newcastle United are keeping a close eye on recent England debutant Angel Gomes ahead of a possible January move for the Lille midfielder.

This comes from The Sun (dubious, I know), who claim that Newcastle could make a cut-price January move for the 24-year-old as his contract is set to run out in the summer of 2025 and he currently has no plans to renew.

Gomes was fairly impressive during his first start for the Three Lions against Finland and it’s believed that there are a number of big clubs who are tracking him,

The former Man Utd man left the Red Devils back in 2020 after making just five Premier League appearances in four years, but he has since flourished in the French division with Lille.

It could be a cut price deal for Newcastle, however, midfield is not an area we are particularly weak in and it’s difficult to see who Gomes displaces the likes of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes or Joelinton, not to mention the fact we also have Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley in our ranks.

There’s a chance we are forward planning, especially if Longstaff fails to sign a new deal and leaves next summer, but I’d take this with a pinch of salt for now, especially when the small and slender Gomes appears to fall short of the sort of profile we’ve tended to target under Eddie Howe.

  2. Our starting three, Big Joe, Sandro and Bruno are decent. Backup three, Little Joe, Sean and Lewis, have been a bit injury-prone.
Would Gomes be an upgrade? Personally, I think he and Santiago Hezze would be possibilities.
