Paul Mitchell pushing to sign Chelsea talent as part of new recruitment drive – Report

Newcastle United are taking a close look at Chelsea talent Josh Acheampong as Paul Mitchell looks to make his mark on the recruitment front.

This comes from Mark Douglas at the i, who reports that we’re eyeing up a move for the versatile defender who may be available for the right price as clubs look to take care of their own PSR issues.

The 18-year-old made his Premier League debut for the Blues last season, coming on as a substitute in the final stages of Chelsea’s 2-0 victory against Tottenham back in April.

Acheampong has been linked before – the Independent reported on our interest in May – and it’s believed scouts feel he has the potential to develop into a future Three Lions regular after landing his first cap for England’s U19s earlier this month.
PSG and Real Madrid were both linked with a move for the 6ft 1′ defender over the summer and Chelsea have previously adopted a ‘not for sale’ stance over one of their top academy prospects.
However, it seems Newcastle believe they are in a good position to pounce given he’d represent ‘pure profit’ for the Blues and help ease their own FFP balance books after yet another free-spending summer at Stamford Bridge.
Douglas adds that Paul Mitchell is keen to bring in more low-cost youngsters who can develop into stars under Eddie Howe, feeling a mixture of first team signings and development players – some of which should emerge from our new global scouting strategy – is key to working within PSR limitations while we work on building revenue streams behind the scenes.
