Paul Mitchell speaks out as Newcastle confirm Academy move

Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell has spoken out following the appointment of Diarmuid O’Carroll as the clubs new Under-21s manager, describing our Academy as “a cornerstone of our sporting strategy.”

O’Carroll arrives from St Mirren where he had been assistant manager for the past couple of years but has now been given the task of developing some exciting young talent in the North East.

It’s been a long search after the departure of Ben Dawson who previously held the role, but Mitchell is delighted to have finally got his man and believes he will be a ‘great fit’ for the club.

Mitchell hopes that O’Carroll will use his experience at youth, international and women’s levels to help the young side in preparing for the next step of their journey.

On the appointment, Mitchell said: “Diarmuid is a very highly regarded coach and is a great fit for the profile we have been looking to recruit.

“He has amassed a wealth of experience during the formative years of his coaching career, working across youth, men’s and women’s club football and at international level.

“The Academy is a cornerstone of our sporting strategy, and Diarmuid’s role is a crucial one in preparing players for the next significant step in their development journeys.

“The Academy has produced exceptional players over recent years, and we look forward to supporting Steve Harper, Diarmuid and our Academy team in continuing to build on that excellent record.”

O’Carroll will be taking on a tough but exciting role in helping to develop the likes of Trevan Sanusi and Alfie Harrison who have shown a lot of potential and will be hoping to experience some first-team action soon enough.
