Saudi PIF to appoint new board member and Eddie Howe set target for 2024/25 – Report

According to Mark Douglas at the i, Newcastle United look set to confirm a new addition to the board connected to minority owners the Reuben brothers as PIF redraft their long-term plans and ambitions for the Magpies.

It’s fair to say it has been a bit of a rocky summer for Newcastle filled with uncertainty as the future of a number of players was up in the air, we appeared to be scrambling for a sporting director and Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi departed.

However, with the transfer window now shut, Saudi chief Yasir Al-Rumayyan is said to be re-evaluating our position and where we aim to be in the next few years, with the ultimate goal remaining to be the ‘best in class’ at everything we do.

Eddie Howe has been set a target of reaching European football this season, and failing to do so could result in a change of manager after just narrowly missing out on the Conference League last year.

The addition of a new board member, who has extensive experience of managing the Reuben brothers’ commercial property portfolio, should hopefully settle things down off the pitch and help in the long-term give Howe a team that is ready to challenge for titles.

  1. Eddie doesn’t want new players. He would keep Longstaff, Wilson, Murphy, Burn, Trippier, Krafth etc forever if he could. He didn’t even want to sell Shelvey.

The pool that Eddie is looking in for new players is very, very small. The only ones in it are those who tick his “right type of character” boxes. Other teams aren’t so picky in that respect.

Good characters is what you want Panther and as much as I like buying British I agree with Mitchell the net has to be expanded but do agree with you on Howe when it comes to selling players he does seem to like holding on to players bit to long and as big a fan I am of Howe my worry is this could be his downfall

He likes to “reward” players, but his reward for Dan Burn’s great first three months is going on for years. Much as the players with character are undoubtedly great lads, would anyone else in the upper echelons of the Premiership take them? Of course they wouldn’t

  4. I agree with Darren Bebb, Howe is a fantastic manager in terms of dealing with the press and is great ambassador for the club, he can build a togetherness within a squad that is essential in the modern game.
He unfortunately for me is too loyal with regards to keeping players who are past their sell buy date for whatever reason be it age, injury prone or contract situations.
In todays climate with PSR and FFP there can be no room for sentiment if you have aspirations to become the best.

Cheeky bastards. You give Eddie no new players and still expect European football? He can **** right off.

Everyone is claiming we would have done much better if we didn’t have such a horrific injury record, so let’s see it this season.
    Then there’s Kelly
And we might get a full season out of Tonali, but I’m not betting on it.
Then there’s always the January window……

I agree. Forget dressing room photos after beating Burnley. Just become ruthlessly efficient, on and off the pitch. Like Aston Villa. They sold Douglas Luiz who was integral to their team last season and Diaby only a year after buying him. Are they suffering? Doesn't look like it.

You can’t compare Emri with Eddie, poor guy he has only managed 2 clubs before us and they had aspirations just to survive. Emri managed winners.

  8. I think that Eddie is trying to manage change. Obviously starting a new season with 11 new players all bought in the summer window would be stupid.
Taking the existing squad and feeding a new face or two into the starting 11 is probably ideal. That means letting go of the Haydens and Frasers of this world, whilst bringing youngsters through and holding onto the experienced player to ensure continuity, particularly in terms of culture and playing style.
It’s about evolution rather than massive change.

I’m not saying massive change but we do have to trade Prem and Up by all accounts Ashworth was ready to do the sales and start to move on but Howe went against it weather that’s true we will never know same as January when the club by all accounts wanted to cash in on Almiron Trippier Wilson but Howe went against it like I’ve said in a previous post Bournemouth fan after last season game said thats his flaw overly loyal and you can’t be like that now with FFP

  10. The football played this season undermines my loyalty to the manager. If he was that good we simply wouldn’t be playing poorly and with most players fit now. And yes he isn’t a winner Wonder what Klopp is up to at the moment?
