Newcastle reignite interest in Brazilian with Eddie Howe a big fan – Report

According to The Mail’s Craig Hope, Newcastle’s recruitment team have been back in Italy to watch talented Atalanta midfielder and Brazilian international Ederson.

Hope reveals that Eddie Howe is a big admirer of the 25-year-old, who appears to have been on the Magpies’ radar for some time after strong links both last year and at the start of 2024.

Though Hope points out that central midfield is perhaps the most saturated area of the Newcastle squad, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock all competing for three starting positions, Ederson’s European pedigree as part of Atalanta’s Europa League-winning side and his defensive capabilities far eclipse those of any of Newcastle’s current midfield.

In his latest column for Mail+, Hope adds, “While that area of the pitch (midfield) is not currently a priority, it could become more pressing next summer were others in that department to move on.”

The Magpies are unfortunately not the only Premier League club interested in the midfielder, with both Liverpool and Manchester United thought to be keen on the Brazilian who impressed in Atalanta’s Champions League opener against Arsenal last week.

The Brazilian star still has another two years left on his contract with Gian Piero Gasperini’s Italian side, and if news earlier in the summer are to be any indicator, it would take at least £50m to bring the midfielder to Tyneside.
