Eddie Howe has spoke to the media following on from Newcastle’s disappointing 0-0 draw with Everton away at Goodison Park.
Newcastle were left to rue many missed opportunities, including an early goal line clearance by Iliman Ndiaye from Bruno Guimaraes’ shot, despite having the lion’s share of possession and shots across the 90 minutes.
“We created a lot of good chances and I am frustrated we haven’t won. But it was much better. It looked like we were snatching at chances.
“I have to credit the players because it is a difficult environment to play in and it is a much better defensive display from us too. Big steps forward.
“I think there has been a reaction. We stood up to the physical test and were technically very good. We are trying to break barriers and have an outstanding season. I think we are capable of more and we have some tough fixtures to come.”
The main talking point from the game came in the first half, when Anthony Gordon, last week’s penalty hero against Manchester City, saw his spot kick saved by former teammate Jordan Pickford, much to the delight of both the Everton players and fans.
Speaking about Gordon’s performance against his old club, Howe commented “I think Anthony handled the occasion very well. I think his all-round game was very good. He will be disappointed with the penalty. Credit to Jordan Pickford for the save.”
Many have been quick to question if Gordon was the right option to take the penalty considering the circumstances, and having a seasoned pen taker like Fabian Schar also available, but Howe has stood by his number 10.
“There was a lot of pressure on him in that moment, but he’s been an outstanding penalty taker.”
“I see him work on it every day in training, so I’ve got no issues with him taking it, or taking another one in the future. We really do back him, and I think he did really well in the game.”
“Anyone can miss a penalty. We absolutely support him, he’s been incredible for us. I thought today was a positive day for him.”
It’s now back-to-back draws for the Magpies in the league, but an improvement on last season’s 3-0 loss at the hands of the Toffees, with Howe being full of praise for his side’s reaction to the Goodison Park atmosphere.
Agree with Howe completely. We looked a lot better. We played well up to the final third – and I agree we were snatching at chances.
The penalty was awful – can’t put it any other way. But Gordon worked his socks off yesterday & overall had a really good game. But he’s not a CF and I don’t really like him through that central position.
But that wasn’t while we didn’t take the 3 points. That was because we possessed little to no threat from the multiple set pieces we had. It’s because our midfield couldn’t score in a brothel.

Gordon was poor yesterday ( decision making/ composure).
Concur he’s not a natural CF but hes good enough and he’s played in that role often enough(incl england u21’s) to have taken at least one of his three gilt chances.
Working hard is never mitigation for other players in the team ( cough cough .. almiron/longstaff) so ironic it’s a defence for Gordon.
Suspect at least part of his performance is his continuing emotions about Everton and he’s good enough to get past that. Not singling him out as he wasn’t alone, with the team generally ineffective up top.
Looking forward to having Isak, Wilson and Miley available for Brighton game
