Alan Shearer believes Newcastle United should return with another bid for Marc Guehi in January and look to sign a right-winger AND another centre forward.
Newcastle fans were left bitterly disappointed by our failure to capture Guehi after months of rumours and negotiating. In the end, it felt like there was no backup plan and ultimately we were left short, with no centre-back or right winger arriving over the summer.
The club now have a chance to make amends by going big in January and looking at the squad it does feel like at least two big additions are needed to really strengthen and push for a top five position, especially with early-season concerns over the fitness of Callum Wilson
Speaking to The Magpie Channel, Shearer admitted that we are in great need of a centre half and attacker, but added that if the Crystal Palace defender is not available for the right price then we need to quickly move on to other targets.
“He (Guehi) is one of the best around”, Shearer said. “I think he proved that in the summer, so if they can go back in and agree a fee then yeah. But if not then I don’t think they can waste too much time on him.
“If he’s not available then fine you go and look for someone else, but they need to strengthen in that (right winger) position and in the forward position.”
The England international is clearly a talented player and can still grow at 24-years-old, but he’s not a superstar defender who is worth waiting months for and paying an astronomical fee.
Hopefully we get it right in the New Year after a pretty dismal summer and manage to strengthen in at least two priority positions.
So the same three priorities as the summer, which is an indictement on past player trading . Clumsy as his words were maybe Mitchell wasn’t off the mark, eh? CB is less pressing, IF botman and lascelles are looking good by Jan.
I would GK too.
So let’s see what Mitchell and co can do witha but if time to expand overseas networks and some planning as if we can all see the priorities I’m sure they can too

I’d avoid Guehi as it’s looking like a Bramble Woodgate thing as in he’s not been the same since Anderson left Palace. Superstar LMAO

Avoid Guehi, it will be the biggest mistake to go ahead and sigh him, he has been terrible all season and just look where Palace are, he played his heart out for England but knew Newcastle were looking so he out performed himself to attract the attention. He’s £25, 000, 000 at best.

Guei has been awful this season and was dropped by England yesterday .. avoid unless the price is what Transfermarket register at £35 million .. much better players available in Europe
