It looks increasingly likely that Marc Guehi will leave Crystal Palace in one of the next two transfer windows, as the England defender is not expected to sign a new deal amid interest from Newcastle.
Courtesy of the Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel, Palace chiefs are becoming increasingly resigned to the prospect of selling their star man in the next year, or risk losing him on a free in 2026.
His piece states, ‘Mail Sport has learned that Eagles bosses have tried to initiate talks over an extension for Guehi but – as of yet – they have received little encouragement that the 24-year-old is willing to commit his future anywhere as of now.’
Guehi was of course subject to serious interest and a host of bids from Newcastle over the summer, only to see repeated efforts and negotiations stalled by Crystal Palace Chairman Steve Parish.
But after a poor start to the season for both the 24-year-old and his club, Palace’s bargaining power in future negotiations may have gotten significantly weaker as he approaches the final 18 months of his deal.
Mokbel writes ‘Palace rejected an offer worth £70million for Guehi during the summer window – and as my Mail Sport colleague Craig Hope revealed in his Newcastle Confidential column last week, the Magpies retain an interest in the defender heading into the January transfer window.’
Regardless of the interest, it’s thought that Guehi remains committed to captaining the club in what could be an impending relegation battle. Mokbel states that Guehi ‘wants to focus his attentions on leading the team’, especially in his new role as captain, but has increasing power over his future as Palace struggle to tie him down to a new deal.
Should Newcastle maintain their solid start to the season, it could potentially strengthen the Magpies’ hand in negotiations, with the prospect of European football no doubt being very enticing to a player currently in the bottom half of the division.
Hope we don’t waste money on him .. he was stopped by England and has been mediocre this season … dodged a £70 million bullet me thinks
