Marc Guehi saga takes another twist and Saudis make Newcastle vow - Report
The Telegraph's Luke Edwards has issued an update on Newcastle's transfer situation ahead of the January window, revealing the latest on Marc Guehi after confirming our interest in Bryan Mbeumo and the club's 'grave' PSR situation.
In what is described as a ‘bleak financial outlook’ where any big-money move this winter would need to be followed by a significant sale next summer, United would appear to be hamstrung by PSR rules as the club desperately needs to increase its revenues if it is to compete at the highest level and fill the glaring gaps in the squad.
The report highlights that Newcastle had been expected to have manoeuvrability in the transfer market after the recent Guehi saga showed the club’s willingness to spend big on the perceived 'right player', but the failure to move on deadwood, aging senior players on large contracts, and a bumper renewal for Anthony Gordon have pushed PSR calculations right back against the wire.
Edwards states that a renewed bid for Guehi has been discussed, but it would require ‘Palace to come to the table first’ and approach United – who feel they were messed about by the Eagles in the summer.
From Guehi’s side, his representatives are reportedly advising him to stay put until the summer when he will have just 12 months remaining on his contract and his asking price will be significantly reduced. This suggests the player is being encouraged to keep his options open, with any cut-price fee likely to attract other suitors at next summer.
The report does contain some good news too. There have been reassurances from PIF that future investment in Newcastle will not be impacted by a recently announced reduction in overseas spending, meaning there will be no impact on the long-term stadium plans.
Personally, this all feels a little like preparation of the fanbase for the departure of one of our big players next summer, whether it’s Bruno, Isak or Tonali is all that remains to be seen. If that really is the plan, let's hope it's offset by a quality signing - or two - in January.
