Eddie Howe was full of praise for Joelinton following Newcastle’s encouraging 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Chelsea at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening.
The Brazilian was handed a start in the centre of midfield against the Blues on Sunday, which ended in a 2-1 defeat, but was poised on the left side, where his display stood out
In his place, Joe Willock was put in the middle of the park, on the left of a midfield three, with Sandro Tonali and Sean Longtsaff positioned to the right of him.
It was a return to previous successes – Willock and Joelinton had worked well together in the 2022/23 season on that flank and last night was a tasty reminder of the fruitful partnership.
Joelinton really stood out and Howe was quick to give his player acclaim for the display. “I have to say a special well done to Joelinton today.” Howe said. “His versatility is just incredible, he’s such a bonus for us to be able to play him wide left, wide right, wingback, brilliant performance.”
Joelinton’s display is a timely reminder that Newcastle have another option on that side, with Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes also able to play there. It will be interesting to see what Howe chooses down the flanks in the comings weeks.
On this, Howe added: “It’s a difficult position for me to pick because we have an array of riches on that side with Anthony, Harvey, Joe and Joelinton. When Joelinton and Willock play together they dovetail that position really well. I’m not sure what the final solution for that is other than we have got very good players competing for positions.”
