Eddie Howe snubbed the chance to sign Chelsea’s Axel Disasi during the summer transfer window, a new report from The Mail’s Craig Hope has claimed.
After failing to clinch a deal with Marc Guehi, with Crystal Palace rejecting numerous offers for the England international, Sky Sports reported over the summer that Disasi was under consideration on Tynesid along with Bayer Leverkusen’s Edson Tapsoba.
The French centre-back joined Chelsea in 2023 for a reported €45m before making 44 appearances across all competitions in his debut season at Stamford Bridge.
Despite showing early promise at Chelsea, Disasi was not included in France’s Euro 2024 squad. There have been question marks around him ever since he moved to West London from Monaco.
He had joined the French club when Paul Mitchell was in charge and was a standout performer for the Ligue 1 outfit. It would appear as though the Magpies sporting director felt that he would be a good buy for the club but that Howe had other ideas, according to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail.
Starting at right-back, Disasi delivered a sub-par display mid-week in Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in the League Cup. He scored an own-goal and had a tough time against Joelinton and Joe Willock as the Toon progressed to the quarterfinals.
Going into the January transfer window, Newcastle have reportedly turned their attention to a right-winger. Centre-backs Jaamal Lascelles and Sven Botman are set to make a return to action, while the right flank needs desperately upgrading with Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron occupying those positions.
We have a right winger – Anthony Gordon.
Personally I think it is stupid to play right footed players on the left wing and left footed players on the right wing .
Gordon should always play on the right.
