Former Mag completes free transfer following Newcastle United exit

Paul Dummett, long time cult hero on Tyneside and former Wales international, has returned to professional football after his contract expired over the summer, sealing a free agent move to League One side Wigan.

Dummett has joined Wigan Athletic, having previously held talks with Portsmouth and Sheffield United in the past month about a return to the game.

Media reports highlighted yesterday that Dummett held “successful talks” with Latics manager Shaun Maloney and will soon start training with Wigan’s squad after signing a short-term contract.

Dummett starred for Eddie Howe’s side in their run to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals last season, recording back-to-back clean sheets against both Manchester City and Manchester United as we eliminated both clubs from the competition in the process.

And with 213 appearances for the Toon during his long tenure at the club, it’s no surprise that both League One and Championship sides have enquired about the Geordie’s services.

Wigan currently find themselves 19th in the league, though possess a positive goal difference despite their low position. Strengthening that defence with Dummett’s experience could be the catalyst Maloney’s men need to surge up the table and improve on last season’s 12th place finish.
