Identity of player Newcastle scouted on Saturday goes public – One to watch?

Earlier this week, The Chronicle revealed that Newcastle United sent a scout to check out an unnamed Championship talent in Coventry’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield United last Saturday.

A few days later, the identity of the player in question has now emerged, with The Mail’s Craig Hop reporting that Coventry striker Norman Bassette is on the radar of the club’s recruitment team.

Dubbed the ‘next Viktor Gykokeres’ for his similar frame, movement and skillset, along with the fact he’s catching the eye at Coventry, Hope reveals that Newcastle scouts not only watched him score in last weekend’s draw with the Blades but also in previous Championship games at Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

After impressing in the second tier following a £2.5million from Ligue 2 side Caen over the summer, Bassette was handed his first cap for the Belgian senior team earlier this month, where he came off the bench in a UEFA Nations League clash with Israel.

It’s believed Newcastle are ‘keeping close tabs’ on his development with the Sky Blues and will no doubt continue to do so following Frank Lampard’s appointment

Whether we end up pursuing the striker in future transfer windows or targeting a slightly more senior option remains to be seen, but it’s no surprise to see scouts watching forwards given Callum Wilson is out of contract at the end of the season and at risk of leaving on a free transfer, as things stand.
