Marc Guehi update – Newcastle name fee they’re willing to pay Crystal Palace in January?

After confirming that Newcastle United will allow Miguel Almiron to leave in January in a piece for The Telegraph yesterday, Luke Edwards has also issued an update on Marc Guehi.

As we know, the club made a number of attempts to sign the Crystal Palace centre-back over the summer, but eventually walked away from a deal after the Eagles reportedly turned down our final offer worth £65m.

Several months later, Guehi has endured a tough start to the season at Palace, who we face at 3pm tomorrow, and refused to sign a new contract at Selhurst Park, leaving just over 18 months left to run on his contract.

As a result, The Telegraph report that Newcastle will only revisit a deal for the England international in January if Crystal Palace ‘make it clear’ they’d be willing to sell their captain at a ‘far more reasonable price’ of around £50m.

This would be around £15m less than our alleged final offer in August, but with his contract situation unresolved and his form taking a dip so far this season, Palace may be forced to consider lower offers in the New Year.

If not, they risk losing the 24-year-old for a cut-price fee next summer, where he’ll have only 12 months left on his deal. That said, wait until the end of the season and Newcastle’s hopes of landing Guehi may also be reduced, as other suitors are likely to arrive in hope of landing the defender at a much lower fee.

It remains to be seen if we’ll go back in for Guehi, wait until the summer and/or pursue other positions instead in January, but a lot will come down to Palace’s January demands, it seems, with Newcastle reluctant to be involved in another drawn out transfer saga for the second window running.

  1. Still way over priced. I thought in the summer anything over £40m was too much – he’s done nothing so far this season to suggest he’s worth more than that imo.

  2. I think he wants to come to Newcastle but it’s Parishes call regarding what palace wants
Parish could also be under pressure from shareholders as he turned down 65-70 million for him
So start the bidding if we still want him at40million and see from there but don’t chase him all window

  3. 50 million for an underperforming defender with only 4 months left on his contract?

I think Edwards is having a larf! Does he believe that the secret to a good April Fools joke is to not have it on April 1st so you can catch everyone unawares?

50 million would have been too much back in the summer. We should just say no thanks and take a punt at the end of the season if he’s still around.
