Newcastle identify potential alternative to James Trafford – Report

After a quiet year on the transfer front, Newcastle United could be in for a busy 2025 as those at the top plan a mini rebuild to propel the club into those top four spots.

There’s a handful of positions under focus – a right-winger and centre-back are priorities – but the arrival of a new goalkeeper is another one to watch as we look to eventually replace current number one Nick Pope.

Pope was been a tremendous servant for the club so far, but his poor distribution is limiting the club moving forwards and the aim is to bring in a younger model who can grow and develop to suit the style of football we wish to play.

Newcastle eyeing Liverpool stopper?

According Ben Jacobs’ latest piece for TEAMtalk, Newcastle are keeping a close eye on Liverpool shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher.

He reports that we hold ‘concrete interest’ in the 26-year-old, who will be allowed to leave if a suitable offer arrives next summer.

The Irish international has impressed when stepping up for the injured Alisson this season, but with Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardashvilli incoming in 2025 following his loan back to Valencia, Kelleher will be surplus to requirements.

The Reds won’t be short of potential suitors for Kelleher, who has already proven he is Premier League standard and is looking to make the step up to become someone else’s first choice in goal.

Toon still keen on Trafford

Alongside Kelleher, Newcastle remain firmly interested in Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford who we attempted to sign last summer but failed to agree a fee on.

The 22-year-old has less Premier League experience than the Liverpool man, but he was playing behind a much worse defence last season and at four years younger he still has a lot more to learn between the sticks.

Should Burnley fail to get promoted this year, you’re probably looking at a cut-price deal, though the same goes for Kelleher who could force his way out of the club given the competition in his position.

  1. I would favour this lad of the 2 to be honest. I’ve been well impressed with him filling in for Allison.

  2. Hmm .. seems at the edge of the age group Mitchell has talked about recruiting so it’s a now rather than future option that merely pushes the GK problem down the road.
Not sure how much of an upgrade on pope he’d be for the premium nufc’d pay or if there’s a reason he’s a 2nd choice.
So no I’d prefer they tested their scouting network to find the next GK sensation

  3. Since when has there been concern about pope’s
distribution ?… another media “story’ from the back pages of the daily star? Or one of Edwards ?
Pope a very good keeper as I’d dubravka .. paying out £30 million for caomin would be a waste of money
