A Newcastle United loanee has been in fine form recently, which has attracted interest from higher up the Football League pyramid.
Loan spells have been a mixed bag of success over the last few seasons. Jamal Lewis’ time at Sao Paolo recently came to a premature end and wasn’t the first time a loan hasn’t been completed, with Isaac Hayden having an ill-fated spell at Standard Liege in 2023/24.
A January break clause may well see one of our current talents find another move this month, with a step up from League Two to the Championship touted.
White receiving interest after impressing out on loan
After bagging three goals and an assist in his last five games, Geordie midfielder Joe White has seen his loan spell with MK Dons go from strength to strength.
The Mail’s Craig Hope reveals that a January break clause was added into the terms of that loan move, and it seems a few second tier sides could take advantage of that.
Hope reports that several Championship teams are monitoring White’s situation, leaving the 22-year-old with a decision to make this month should he receive offers. He may opt to build on his game time and form in League Two, or challenge himself in a higher division for the second half of 2024/25.
White’s recent goal against fellow Newcastle United loanee Max Thompson in between the sticks for Chesterfield was his fifth of the season, and there is a feeling that it may be now or never for his Newcastle career.
White needs to step up soon
It’s good to see that White has impressed in League Two but, now 22-years-old, he must take the leap and try to pick up minutes at the highest level possible if he has to have any hope of forging a career in black-and-white.
Elliot Anderson took the leap straight from impressing in League Two to join the ranks in the Premier League after a superb showing at Bristol Rovers, but the Scotsman is an outlier rather than the blueprint.
White first and foremost needs to be somewhere where he is guaranteed minutes, which he wouldn’t be near at the Toon at the moment, but we won’t know if he is near the Premier League level if he continues to ply his trade in League Two.
