Fatigue may have crept in after a busy end to 2024 and two trips to London to start 2025, but there’s some good news to share on the injury front.
Speaking after our 2-0 win at Arsenal on Tuesday, Eddie Howe revealed that Alexander Isak (hamstring) and Sven Botman (groin) were two of ‘three or four players’ who had ‘little niggles’ at the Emirates.
However, a positive update has arrived on both, along with some good news on Emil Krafth’s injury situation.
Double boost and Krafth back!
As revealed by Craig Hope at The Mail, Isak and Botman have avoided injuries and will be rested for our FA Cup third round tie against Bromley, keeping them fresh for next week’s Premier League double-header at home to Wolves and Bournemouth.
Isak complained of tightness in his hamstring during the win against Arsenal, and was promptly substituted at the hour mark to avoid any potential injury.
Botman felt a similar feeling in his groin on Tuesday and did incredibly well to start two games in four days – at Tottenham and Arsenal – so soon after his return from ACL surgery. But Newcastle are confident he’ll be OK for next week’s games.
Eddie Howe is widely expected to play a much-rotated team in the FA Cup, with Fabian Schar and Lloyd Kelly ‘likely’ to start in the heart of the defence, giving Botman and Burn an afternoon off.
Isak and Botman avoiding injury isn’t the only positive injury news for the team, with Emil Krafth back in full training after missing out with a broken collarbone since November.
The 30-year-old, heralded by fans for some of his performances earlier in the season, could feature against Bromley, and is no doubt a welcome return to the squad ahead of a packed fixture schedule of three games in just seven days.
Hopefully we avoid any other knocks on Sunday and advance through to the Fourth Round, with Bromley an ideal chance for fringe men and youngsters to impress Howe.
