Player ratings from Newcastle 3-1 Bromley – One 8/10, a few 7.5s and three 5s

Another win for Newcastle United to make it eight on the spin, as stunning goals from Lewis Miley and Will Osula were the standout moments from a 3-1 FA Cup win over League Two Bromley.

Here’s our player ratings and comments on each Mag involved at St James’ Park today:

Dubravka (6) – Will be disappointed to have been beaten from long range especially after getting a hand to the shot. Didn’t have much else to do.

Trippier (6.5) – Uncharacteristically weak in the challenge which led to the Bromley goal. Inverted into a central midfield position at times in the first half and was barking orders all game. Still a vital member of the squad.

Schar (7) – Pinged some delicious long balls as is customary for him. Didn’t have much defending to do and spent most of his time in the Bromley half.

Kelly (6) – Few sloppy giveaways aside, it was a decent performance but not one that will be forcing him into the starting eleven anytime soon.

Targett (7.5) – Vital minutes for Targett who did well as an outlet on the left. Found himself in great positions but will be disappointed with the final ball. Nearly scored in the second half but set up the opener and won the penalty

Longstaff (5) – Seemed to be playing in slow motion at times, with his flat first half display featuring some poor touches and safe passing. Didn’t do anything to suggest he warrants a starting berth.

Miley (8) – Man of the match. Maybe a bit weak for Bromley’s goal but after that barely put a foot wrong. Special goal to equalise from 25 yards out. A real talent who needs more opportunities. Glides with the ball and rarely gives it away.

Joelinton (6.5) – Wasn’t due to start but a Willock knock changed that. Threw his weight around in typical big Joe fashion without fashioning any opportunities. Was taken off at half time, allowing Bruno to offer that extra bit of creativity.

Almiron (5) – Frustrating performance. Always seems to make the hard look easy and the easy look hard. Effort can’t be faulted but offers no end product.

Barnes (5.5) – The big loser of the day. Was given a real opportunity from the start and failed to impress culminating in being subbed off at half time.

Osula (7.5) – What a strike! Unbelievable way to open his account for the club. Didn’t have many opportunities but his endeavour to chase lost causes endeared him to fans, as did some solid pieces of hold up play.

Subs:

Gordon (7.5) – Dispatched the penalty with aplomb and changed the game when he came on. Threatened the Bromley defence all half and put a good shift in as a centre forward too.

Guimaraes (7) – We looked a lot better with Bruno on which is hardly breaking news. He was the only one who looked like he could play a defence splitting pass. Probably didn’t expect to play 45min.

Hall (7) – Did no defending but galloped forward at every opportunity. Good outing to stretch the legs

Sanusi (6) – Showed flashes of pace and trickery, but was dispossessed on several occasions by the Bromley defence. Welcome to senior football!

Tonali (NR) – Came on for the final

  1. Barnes, Almiron and Longstaff only look average when they have good players around them, when they have to make the running that’s a different story.
Miley looks as though he can be relied upon when needed, good to see him get some much needed game time.

  2. Notice? Sanusi comes out, Bruno comes up to him, says something in his ear, and Sanusi turns away and takes the gum out of his mouth. Upbringing 🙂

  3. Miley MoM by a mile. Sanusi disappointing in the few chances he had, never beat any one man, sadly.

  4. Miggy was awful through the 1st half he did grow into the game but was average at best
