Newcastle interested in signing Lucas Chevalier – New claims from France

Newcastle United have now been linked with another goalkeeper amid rumours that we are looking to recruit a long-term replacement for Nick Pope in 2025.

While Pope has performed admirably between the sticks, with some particular highlights coming in the Champions League, he’s had a few injuries over the past two seasons and struggles to play out from the back.

In the past month or so, we’ve seen what having someone comfortable on that ball can do with Martin Dubravka stepping up in Pope’s absence, although it’s likely to be Dubravka’s last season even if he does stay until the summer.

Newcastle to battle PSG and Chelsea for Lille stopper?

According to French outlet Sports Zone, Newcastle are one of a handful of clubs who are showing interest in Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who is quickly becoming one of Europe’s best.

This isn’t the first Lille player we’re thought to be tracking, with soon-to-be out of contract striker Jonathan David also heavily linked over the past 12 months.

Having been third choice during Lille’s title winning season in Ligue 1, Chevalier waited patiently for his chance in the first team, eventually making his debut for his boyhood club in September 2022.

Since then, the 23-year-old has been first choice for the French club and has gone on to play in the Champions League debut, impressing in a 1-0 win over Real Madrid, and being called up France’s national team.

It’s clear to see why Newcastle are showing an interest in the shot-stopper, but the likes of PSG, Chelsea, Man United and Man City are also in the mix, meaning we could face stiff competition.

Chevalier links show how key Paul Mitchell could be

Having worked across a number of clubs scouting some top talent like Sadie Mane and Heung-Min Son, Mitchell will be absolutely crucial in helping us identify targets in the coming windows.

Previously working at Monaco, the 43-year-old would have watched Chevalier first-hand and known of his potential from early days, and that’s exactly what we’re hoping he can bring to Newcastle.

If we secure a top-four finish and have money to spend in the summer, the Lille star could be an upgrade on fellow target James Trafford.
