Major updates have emerged on the futures of two Newcastle United players receiving serious interest as we hit the midway point of the January transfer window.
News broke yesterday of a surprise bid from Turkey for Lloyd Kelly, while Miguel Almiron may have played his last game for the club as reports of a return to the MLS grew following his cameo in our 3-0 win over Wolves on Wednesday night.
Here’s the latest, with some big claims emerging on what looks set to be our first major exit of 2025:
£10m offer set to be accepted
According to Craig Hope at The Mail, Newcastle United look set to accept a £10m offer that’s arrived for want-away winger Miguel Almiron.
Last night, David Ornstein reported that Atlanta United had made their move for Miggy – who left the MLS side for Newcastle in 2019 – and it seems they are all set to sign the 30-year-old.
Hope reveals that Almiron is keen on a return to his former club and a deal is expected to advance over the coming days to end his six-year stint at St James’ Park.
MLS rivals Charlotte FC and a number of clubs in Brazil have shown interest, but it looks as thought Miggy will be heading back to Atlanta.
Kelly bid lower than first reported?
Yesterday, The Athletic reported that the Istanbul-outfit had come forward with a £11m offer for Kelly’s services: an instant profit on a player who only just arrived on Tyneside this summer.
However, some very different claims have emerged from Craig Hope this morning, who reports that the Turkish giants offer just north of £6m.
This has been quickly rejected by the club, with a deal now looking unlikely unless Fenerbahce come back with a second bi ‘well in excess’ of their opening offer.
Kelly affords Howe some welcome depth in defence. But only seven starts all season, coupled with the recent return of Sven Botman and the brilliant form of left-sided defenders Dan Burn and Lewis Hall means his route to starts isn’t looking great.
If the Magpies were to sell the 26-year-old, it would be an instant boost from a PSR perspective, but we won’t be accepting low-ball offers and look set to sell Miggy instead.
£20m minimum for Kelly. Proven Premier League defender, versatile, in his prime. If he’d signed a new deal at Bournemouth he certainly wouldn’t have been available for £6m or even £11m. We need to get better at selling.

If he wants to leave and they will pay that and take the reported 140k per week wage, get him gone, it’s an albatross contract. Free agent signings always look good up front, but the damage they do to the dressing rooms wage structure is massive.

Agree 100% with that, players and agents get very greedy and hold clubs to ransom.
