Player ratings from Newcastle 3-0 Wolves – One 8.5, two 8/10s and a sloppy 6

Newcastle United beat Wolves 3-0 on Wednesday evening, making it NINE victories on the spin and sending us up to fourth in the process.

Alexander Isak scored in the first half, via a wicked deflection, before adding another goal to his tally in the second half and setting up Anthony Gordon, who made it three with his fifth goal in his last six.

Here’s our player ratings and comments on each Mag involved at St James’ Park last night:

Dubravka (7.5) – Made seven saves. Most of them were routine but he made one fantastic stop to push Larsen’s effort onto the post in the second half. Helped us play out from the back once again.

Livramento (7) – Solid display, grew into the game and got forward more in the second half. Still a little shy on 50/50 balls in the air and prone to the odd mistake, but drives us on well and is rarely dribbled past.

Botman (7) – Another solid display after a long injury layoff. Recovered well when out of position but had a quiet night overall due to a lack of quality opposition up against him.

Burn (8) – Kept Wolves’ attackers at arms length all game, dominating Larsen in the air and outmuscling him on the ground. Got done by Cunha once but was generally rock solid, making one brilliant tackle to stop Guedes in the first half.

Hall (7.5) – Some exquisite control in the first half to get away from players closing him down. Remained composed throughout, although some of his corners weren’t the best.

Tonali (8) – Slick on the ball and a tireless engine from a defensive point of view, winning his battles and helping us stop Wolves in transition. Sums him up that in the final stages at 3-0, he burst forward to start an attack then immediately sprinted back to regain possession when it broke down. First name on the team sheet, you’d hate to see the team without him now.

Bruno G. (7.5) – Did Bruno things: recycled possession, won free kicks and passed the ball well and notched his eighth assist of the season to expertly set up Isak’s second. Knocked down slightly as he lost the ball in bad areas two or three times claiming a foul.

Joelinton (6) – One big tackle helped set the tone in the first half, but he made such a sloppy start, with a few shoddy passes and wayward touches. Solid after that and worked hard, but not at his best.

Murphy (7) – Quiet from Jacob after a bright start saw him test Sa with an early shot, but contributed to a big win. Missed out on his usual assist, although he did put a couple of good balls into the box.

Gordon (7.5) – Scored a vital third to kill the game, making it five goals in his last six games. Looked a little lost in the first half but grew into the game played very well in the second.

Isak (8.5) – Big deflection on his first goal but has now scored in eight games in a row, with the easy second strike highlighting his obvious quality in sitting the defenders and goalkeeper down before cooling slotting into the net. Added an assist too, showing his unselfish side to set up Gordon. Simply world class.

Almiron (for Murphy, 76)

Osula (for Isak, 76)

  1. First realistic scores and assessment I’ve seen for this match which was not as easy as the scoreline would suggest, thought Wolves were very well organised and hard to break down yet we got the break plus a bit of fortune when we needed it and that’s what usually happens when your at different ends of the table.

  2. Actually thought we played within ourselves got the impression if Wolves didn’t score we were happy not playing at full throttle Tonali my man if the match
