The January transfer window shuts in two weeks today, giving Newcastle a fortnight to do business and bring in a new right-winger.
Outgoings will be needed, it seems, although it seems increasingly likely that we wait until the summer to recruit instead; a move that wouldn’t go down too well with fans hoping for a mid-season boost.
If PSR allows it and the right player becomes available at the right price, it would be foolish not to invest as we push for Champions League football and our first major domestic trophy since 1955.
With that in mind, here’s the latest name that’s been linked in our search for another wide man:
Newcastle eyeing another Brazilian?
According to reports in Italy, Newcastle United are competing with Fiorentina for Botafogo star Luiz Henrique.
Sunday’s edition of Corriere dello Sport reports that Fiorentina are pushing to sign the 24-year-old, but face competition from Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and Zenit, with Lyon also mentioned despite their financial struggles.
Henrique only joined Botafogo 12 months ago after a spell in La Liga with Real Betis, arriving at the Brazilian giants for €16m this time last year.
The 6ft’ forward has six caps for the Brazil national team and can operate down either flank or up front, offering the sort of versatility Eddie Howe appreciates.
An unlikely signing?
Whether it is one for this month or in the summer, I’m not convinced Henrique is the sort of player we’ll be bringing in to end our long wait for a new right-winger.
He may be big, versatile and a potential late bloomer after impressing out in Brazil, but he scored just once in 41 La Liga appearances while at Real Betis.
After waiting years for a quality upgrade on Miguel Almiron, I think the next right-winger to arrive – either this month or more likely in the summer – will be a young gem with huge potential to reach the top (Tyler Dibling?) or a winger with a proven track record (Bryan Mbeumo?) who can immediately take our attack to the next level.
first trophy since 1955?? It’s been a while but that’s a whopper, lad

1955 was the last time we won a major domestic trophy…
