Newcastle United are not short of players who they admire and would love to sign this month, but as ever it’s a very difficult window to try and get things done, it seems.
While Miguel Almiron looks to be on the way out and Lloyd Kelly appears to have serious interest from Juventus, we’ve been reminded several times that this still does not mean we are likely to bring anyone in.
Despite having been desperate for a new right winger probably for the last two years at least, any potential incomings may have to wait until the summer, much to our frustration.
18-year-old sensation is ‘not for sale’
One player who Newcastle and Eddie Howe look to be very fond of is Southampton’s Tyler Dibling who has been the one highlight in an otherwise miserable season for the Saints so far.
Although only finding the back of the net twice, the teenager certainly fits the profile of being a high energy and driven player that we are looking to add to our team.
However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, Dibling is ‘not for sale’ this month and keen not to rush his development after a breakthrough season at St. Mary’s.
Jacobs states that Newcastle retain strong interest and tried to sign the youngster during Dan Ashworth’s time at the club, but also face competition from Spurs, Man Utd, RB Leipzig and Serie A side Bologna.
Three Toon targets going nowhere this month?
Dibling can now be added to the growing list of right-wing candidates who look set to stay put this month, joining the likes of Johan Bakayoko at PSV and Bryan Mbeumo at Brentford.
Bakayoko’s agent confirmed the Belgian would not be leaving the Dutch giants in an interview earlier this month, while Bees boss Thomas Frank ruled out a mid-season move for top scorer Mbeumo.
PSR issues and the need to sell first has hampered our hopes of signing a new right-winger in January, but this only adds to the feeling that we’ll keep our powder dry this month and go big for a much-needed Miguel Almiron upgrade this summer.
Assuming we do not pursue targets in any other areas of the pitch, this would be our third consecutive window without any major signings on Tyneside.
It also puts a lot of pressure on the next transfer window and leaves us needing European football to have a chance of not only attracting some big names but keeping our top players at the club as well.
