With just over 24 hours left to do business, it looks like Newcastle United could still lose a player or two before Monday’s 11pm deadline.
Last night, widespread reports revealed that Lloyd Kelly was closing in on a move to Juventus after a loan-to-buy agreement that would see the Serie A giants pay a guaranteed £15m at the end of the season.
This morning, we’ve not only seen Kieran Trippier linked with a late move but another full-back receive interest from the Championship.
Newcastle reject Watford bid
According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Newcastle have turned down a loan bid for Matt Targett from Championship side Watford.
He reports that the club will not allow another left-back option to leave now Kelly is close to joining Juventus, meaning the Hornets have been unsuccessful in their attempt to sign Targett.
A move to Vicarage Road would’ve seen Targett join former Mag Moussa Sissoko at Watford, but it seems Eddie Howe has no plans to lose the 29-year-old now Kelly will depart.
Targett has previously been linked with a permanent move to Leeds, although those reports were quickly played down earlier in the week.
Sunday-morning Kelly update
After confirming that a £15m loan-to-buy deal had been verbally agreed last night, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Kelly is waiting to board a flight to Italy as he waits for a final agreement on the terms of payment.
It’s thought an initial loan with an obligation to buy for £15m is agreed, although it seems the two clubs may be discussing the structure of payments and potential add-ons.
Writing on X this morning, Romano said: ‘Lloyd Kelly’s flight will only depart to Italy when Newcastle give final answer on payment terms, in the next hours. Juventus are waiting, after £15m transfer fee agreed.’
