It’s been a tough few years for a certain former Mag who has seen his stock fall despite a strong start to his managerial career.
In 2023, Mike Williamson was flying with Gateshead and poached by MK Dons as a result, handing him his first EFL job after impressing at the GIC.
His stint at MK Dons turned sour after a strong start and he left for Carlisle in a surprise switch to the League Two strugglers in September, where he brought in a former Mag in Paul Dummett on a free.
However, just a few weeks after recruiting Newcastle centre-back Charlie McArthur on loan, he’s been given the boot.
Another loan star sees manager sacked
Carlisle have confirmed that Mike Williamson has been sacked, leaving the former Toon centre-back on the lookout for his fourth job in under 18 months.
This comes just two weeks after U21 star Charlie McArthur joined the League Two side on loan after Williamson pushed for his signature and he’s come straight into the side, playing 90 minutes in each of their last four league games.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time one of our youngsters has seen their manager sacked so soon after leaving on loan, with Alex Murphy seeing Ian Evatt sacked by Bolton just days after he arrived at the promotion-chasing League One side.
In a club statement released just a few moments ago, Carlisle said: ‘Carlisle United Football Club can confirm that head coach Mike Williamson has this morning been relieved of his duties and has left the club with immediate effect.
‘Everyone at the club would like to thank Mike for his efforts during his time at the club. The club will give a further update in the coming days.’
Williamson a big fan of McArthur
Speaking about McArthur after his arrival a fortnight ago, Williamson revealed that he ‘really liked’ after watching the Scottish youth captain closely.
He said: “Charlie is someone who we’ve watched and we really like. We are really thankful to Newcastle for giving us the opportunity to help with his development. He’s got all the attributes you need to be a top centre-half.”
Hopefully this doesn’t destabilise his time at Carlisle and he and Murphy get regular minutes between now and late May.
How would it be bad news for McArthur, he’s played every game since going there on loan and played well which I’m sure any new boss will see from game footage or conversations from the coaching team.
Absolutely glorious(Quote)
The manager who pushed to sign him and is playing him every game has just been sacked…
Hardly ideal.

like i said the coaching staff left will know what he can do and so will any new manager as i said they will review games so hardly bad like you put it.
of course there’s a chance the new manager might not fancy him for the team but how you put it is pure sensationalism maybe you should of used the words you just did – not ideal

The wording of the title – ‘Bad news for Newcastle United loan deal?’
I’m asking the question. As I’ve said, it isn’t ideal and there is a chance it’s bad news for McArthur, especially when he would’ve been working under a former NUFC CB.
