At this stage of the summer transfer window, Newcastle United were searching for late signings after failing with bids for Marc Guehi and seeing a last-ditch offer rejected for Anthony Elanga at Nottingham Forest.
With the January window set to close at 11pm tonight, it looks highly likely that we end another trading period without a first-team signing, despite being on course to raise £30m from Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly.
A big summer will be needed to address several areas of the team and it sounds like a familiar name could be back on our radar.
Guehi bid rejected
According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Newcastle remain interested in signing Marc Guehi, who could be at the heart of a Premier League bidding war this summer.
They reveal that Tottenham launched a late bid for the centre-back, thought to be ‘less’ than the £65m Newcastle put forward last summer, but Crystal Palace have swiftly rejected.
The Eagles have no plans to lose their captain with just hours remaining until tonight’s 11pm deadline. However, with the 24-year-old approaching the final 12 months of his contract, Newcastle could join Spurs and Chelsea in batting it out for his signature in the summer.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has also reported on Guehi’s situation, confirming that Tottenham’s late offer has failed and that Newcastle had FOUR bids turned down by Crystal Palace last summer.
Kelly passes medical
On the subject of potential outgoings, Sky Sports have also issued an update on Lloyd Kelly’s move to Juventus.
Sky’s Dharmesh Sheth reports that the 27-year-old has now passed his medical after travelling to Turin on Sunday, with paperwork now being completed to finalise the move.
Kelly will join the Serie A giants on loan with an obligation to buy worth £20m at the end of the season, although some of that total figure may include the loan fee paid this month.
I was under the impression that we had no targets this window despite “having” money to spend in the summer £40 million? on Guehi.
Add to that the amount off Almiron and Kelly, that’s £70 million, so someone is playing games about how much we have to spend or doesn’t want to spend it.
If what is being said about PSR is true and that is the reason, we will lose a big name in the Summer to finance deals imo.

I think that it is a rolling three year programme, so if we don’t spend now then this year can be seen as the start of the next two years. A low spending year now means that we have more to spend in the future especially with European football and increased revenues.

Prem – that makes total sense mate & could be a good strategy to be fair – spend when you need to (European football).
But there’s a risk to it too I think.
We are in a strong position to win a cup, and there about when it comes to European places – but what if we miss out?!.
How do you go about keeping the likes of Gordon, Isak, Tonali & Bruno?!.

Totally Agree, Sharpy. Depends on past finances. It’s a gamble, but interesting how injuries are down this year, so maybe the new guy is earning his corn.

It is a gamble. To buy a player who would improve the starting 11 AND also slot in without any down turn in performance would surely be a player of 50m+? We just cannot spend that without it meaning a sale before 30th June. I agree the figures done match up, considering offers we made in the summer, but I now think that if they had been accepted, we would be looking at a big outgoing before June 30th. I like the idea that we might be the vulture and pick up a player before 30th June from a team that needs to sell quickly due to PSR. Just like we had to sell Anderson and Minteh.
