Newcastle set for £100m transfer boost – despite frustrating January window

Although it has been a frustrating few windows for Newcastle United supporters, there may well be a light at the end of the tunnel as we end a second January in a row with no signings.

Fans have had to be very patient with the club acknowledging that it’s been a difficult time navigating through the PSR rules that have heavily restricted our activity.

Thankfully, it sounds like our inability to spend could change soon, with new details emerging on the outlook after a productive month of outgoings on Tyneside.

Newcastle’s January gamble worth £100m?

There is no guaranteeing what kind of position we may be in come the end of May – with only the current squad for the second half of the season, we could be two or three big injuries away from crisis mode.

The club are in effect hoping to have a bit of luck on our side and are banking on making it to the summer in a healthy enough position to then finally invest; hopefully with the pull of Champions League football.

According to a report from Mark Douglas at the i, we could have an extra £100m to spend following the recent departures of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly.

Douglas reports that both players had virtually no “book value” in PSR terms, meaning the deals negotiated for both will go on the books as “pure profit”.

While it is hugely frustrating that no first-team ready right-winger arrived in January, Paul Mitchell’s moves to recoup a combined £30m for Almiron and Kelly could be a masterstroke heading into a huge summer.

Newcastle set to be in a powerful position

So many clubs have now been hamstrung by PSR rules which as we have experienced having narrowly avoided punishments with the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.

While we haven’t been very active in recent windows, those at the top of the club are looking to take advantage of our healthy financial position in the summer and could target clubs who will be forced to sell.

There are several targets that we have been eyeing up lately – the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Johan Bakayoko and Tyler Dibling have all been linked as right-winger options – and it looks like we’ll finally have a healthy amount to spend when the window reopens.
