Newcastle United could once again be presented with the opportunity to sign one of Europe’s top strikers who has fallen out-of-favour with his current club.
After three quiet windows, Newcastle may be ready to make a statement signing this summer, especially with some revenue being secured with our January business for Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly.
However, as exciting as it may be, the prospect of this forward arriving on Tyneside seems slim (at best) if a certain Alexander Isak sticks around this summer.
Newcastle set to be offered £60m striker again
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United will be offered another chance to sign Napoli’s Victor Osimhen this summer after baulking at his asking price last summer.
The Nigerian forward is approaching the end of his loan spell at Galatasaray and talk around his future appears to have taken another turn.
Lee Ryder reports that the striker’s representatives are back on the scene and set to reach out to Newcastle, as Osimhen’s £60m release clause will become active this summer following a fallout with Napoli.
The 26-year-old has scored 17 goals in just 28 appearances for Galatasaray, keeping his stock from dropping after a tough period for the powerful forward.
It remains to be seen if Newcastle still hold any interest, but it has been previously reported that head of recruitment Steve Nickson watched Osimhen at Lille prior to the £63m arrival of Alexander Isak.
Non-starter if Isak stays?
While the prospect of adding a striker like Osimhen to the squad seems like an exciting opportunity, there are several factors to consider – with the most important being the cost.
£60m would represent a significant investment – the second most expensive signing in our history – and a massive chunk of our summer budget. His wages, reportedly around £200,000 per week, would add huge strain to the club’s payroll, especially if Isak stays on a new-improved deal.
Eddie Howe’s system also operates with just one central striker and you would struggle to accommodate both Isak and Osimhen without disrupting the team balance. If both Isak and Osimhen were to join forces at St. James’ Park, we would have to manage the playing time of two elite forwards; a luxury VERY few clubs can afford.
As great a talent that he is, I would rather see the money invested in a younger somewhat proved striker as solid back up to Isak. A free alternative, Jonathan David?
Also we are desperate for reinforcement elsewhere, RW, RCB, RB, maybe even a young GK depending what happens with Pope/Dúbravka.
Regardless I’m hoping for a big summer re transfers after some very frugal spending in recent windows.
