One of several emotions I felt when watching Newcastle lift the Carabao Cup on Sunday was that of pure delight for Eddie Howe.
He has done a brilliant job at Newcastle United over the past three and a half years, but he was always going to be ultimately judged on his ability to turn the club from contenders to winners.
Of course, we still have a long way to go, but Sunday was his first piece of major silverware. He is now a trophy-winning manager and there’s a feeling this won’t be his last.
Howe’s behind-the-scenes message
In his latest long read for The Telegraph, Luke Edwards has revealed the message behind the scenes from Eddie Howe following Newcastle’s first domestic trophy for 70 years.
It’s believed the 47-year-old told his players that this moment marks ‘the dawn of a new era’ at the club; and Toon chiefs seem to agree with PIF’s Yasir Al-Rumayyan expected to back the manager with money to spend and signings this summer.
Not only that, Edwards shares Howe’s message to friends after victory. Howe told those close that this was the ‘greatest day of his career’ and one that’s left him hungrier than ever to deliver more silverware at St James’ Park.
Howe’s interview after Sunday’s celebrations
Speaking to Keith Downie on Monday after Sunday’s celebrations, a tired but elated Eddie Howe spoke brilliantly once again.
“We are an emotional football club”, he said with a smile, revealing how special it was to give supporters that moment before “getting back to work” and focusing on the final two months of the Premier League season.
Typical of Howe, he wasn’t at the after party long, but encourages the players to enjoy their moment and take it all in before between now and our next Premier League game against Brentford on Wednesday 2nd April.
We’re very lucky to have him, he gets the club, the fans and the city and he’s a hard worker,,, I’d love to think he will kick on and leave a dynasty at St James 🙏🙏🙏🙏

I think the changes they made in preparation for this final to 2 years ago was a key factor to us winning the game.
Being so close to Wembley last time & having things like personal letters read out to the players – they were emotionally exhausted before a ball was kicked.
This time round Howe made it about the game rather than the occasion – it was brilliant.
He controlled the players emotions & sent the out with fire in their belly rather than joy in their hearts.
I have no doubt England will come calling again – and now Howe has achieved with us, there is a chance his head could be turned – particularly if the club continue to struggle to get ahead of PSR.

Totally agree!

There is so much work to do regarding increasing revenues to put us anywhere near the premier leagues corrupt six.
Until this happens the PIF can say they will back us all they like, but it is nothing more than sentiment because the mind may be willing but the flesh is weak due to PSR.
The quickest way for us to achieve success is through :-
Having a successful team with a good manager that can qualify for the champions league every season, because that is where the money is and that will attract the sponsorship required.
A new stadium with big sponsorship for naming rights.
A management team that can obtain global sponsorship on a massive scale.
It maybe a case of what comes first the chicken or the egg scenario but one thing is certain it’s all about getting the Money into the club in the most efficient way to enable us to spend.
Compared to the Ashley era I know which one I prefer.
Liverpool’s anthem words “with hope in your heart” has never seemed quite so poignant for us at this moment in time.
