£30m release clause twist - Newcastle target set to be available at bargain price

Liam Delap is set to be at the centre of the summer’s top transfer saga, where Newcastle could secure one of the biggest rising stars in the Premier League at a bargain price.

And there’s been a latest twist in the tale that might just push the Geordies even further into making Delap theirs.

But after such news, it may just incentivise a number of top Europe and Premier League clubs to push for Delap’s signature.

Release clause twist

In a breaking press report from The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg, the release clause attached to Delap is in fact much lower than the £40m figure recently reported.

Steinberg writes that the 22-year-old’s release clause  will actually fall to £30m in the event of Ipswich being relegated from the Premier League.

And with the Tractor Boys currently 12 points adrift from safety with nine games to play, it will take a minor miracle for Ipswich to survive and keep Delap on their books.

A no-brainer for Newcastle

With our striker options looking relatively thin as Callum Wilson looks likely to depart this summer, the signing of Delap seems like a no-brainer; especially at this price.

With 12 goals across 33 games in all competitions, the former Manchester City man is enjoying a breakout season, scoring just one fewer than proven talisman such as Ollie Watkins and Jean-Philipe Mateta despite playing for a struggling Ipswich side.

The demands of European football took its toll heavily on Eddie Howe’s side back in the 2023/24 campaign, which makes squad depth an absolute top priority this summer for Paul Mitchell and co.

Delap as a back up to the aforementioned Isak and as a more senior option to Will Osula could work wonders under Eddie Howe's coaching.
