Newcastle in talks to sign Jordan Barrera - Report
Under Dan Ashworth and new sporting director Paul Mitchell, Newcastle United have clearly been looking to recruit hidden gems from across the globe in a bid to overcome PSR issues.
Signing top talent at reasonable fees in the hope they'll come good is a sound approach, but requires good scouting and a plan in place to allow them to shine; whether that's out on loan initially or within the club's Academy.
Another player in this category has been linked this week, with Paul Mitchell seemingly tapping into a South American market chief scout Steve Nickson knows well.
Toon in talks over Barrera deal?
Newcastle United are competing with Napoli for the signature of Colombian talent Jordan Barrera, according to reports in Italy.
Area Napoli reveal that the Serie A giants are attempting to sign the 19-year-old this summer, but reveal that Newcastle are also in the mix, stating that contact has been made between the two clubs.
Barrera impressed for Colombia's Under 20's at the 2025 South American U20 Championship earlier this year, chipping in with a goal and four assists as his country finished third in the tournament.
Newcastle scouts were present and it's thought the Atlético Junior midfielder caught our eye, with talent spotters from Napoli, Porto and Borussia Dortmund also interested after watching his standout displays.
With no European passport, Napoli may struggle to land the teenager this summer, handing Newcastle a chance to step in if a work permit can be obtained.
The report also states that a fee in the region of €5-6m may be enough to land the South American, which could prove to be a smart investment if he has what it takes to make it at the top.

Global search picking up under Paul Mitchell?
We've previously recruited Yankuba Minteh from Danish side Odense, but our push for overseas talent has only picked up since then.
Georgian forward Vakhtang Salia will arrive from Dinamo Tiblisi in August and it looks like we've won the race to bring in Spanish winger Antonio Cordero from Malaga.
Academy talent Barran Yildiz also signed from Turkey earlier this year along with Irish youth international Kyle Fitzgerald.
