Will Osula set for loan move as Newcastle face two striker decisions - Report

In a piece that revealed Newcastle's plan to pursue Ipswich star Liam Delap this summer, The Telegraph's Luke Edwards also issued updates on two other Toon strikers.

Delap could be targeted to compliment Alexander Isak ahead of our return to Europe, but that also leaves a decision to make on Callum Wilson and Will Osula.

There has been an update on the contract situation of Wilson, which is currently set to expire in the summer, meanwhile a clearer plan for the near future of Osula is also starting to develop.

Osula plan and Wilson deal in the balance

Newcastle are ‘likely’ to loan out Wil Osula to provide him with more first-team experience. Meanwhile, Callum Wilson hopes of earning a contract extension aren’t over just yet, according to Luke Edwards’ latest report for The Telegraph.

While we have shown interest in signing Ipswich forward Liam Delap, this doesn't necessarily signal the end of Wilson's tenure at the club. Despite a season plagued by injuries, the 33-year-old striker has been encouraged to earn a contract extension through his performances in the remaining games.

It was initially believed that Wilson would be departing when his contract expires this summer, however, it now appears that might not necessarily be the case with the England international’s leadership and influence in the dressing room valued by Eddie Howe, who may use him as a third choice option next term.

With European football coming to the North East next season, the board recognises the need for a deeper squad. Although Wilson is among the club's highest earners, which could be a sticking factor in negotiations.

Loan move makes sense for Osula

Simply put, Will Osula needs minutes if the talented but raw forward is going to progress into a regular in the first team and he needs it to be a prolonged run at a senior level.

Lewis Hall’s breakthrough this year has been impressive, with questions around how he would transition into the starting XI answered emphatically after the majority of his minutes in 2023/24 came from the bench.

The concern for Osula is he doesn’t have the same route to starts as Hall had, with the Dane competing for minutes with Alexander Isak.

With the former Blades talent unlikely to displace the Swede anytime soon, a loan move could make a lot of sense for the 21-year-old, especially if someone like Delap also arrives this summer.
