Sorry Newcastle, but this is a step too far…

For me it’s a hard no on the badge change at Newcastle United. I don’t know nor care how much it saves.

The only way I’d accept it is if we went back to the original. We have enough money from continuous roll-outs of merch and Sam Fender gigs, but that badge is a take on the original city crest.

The castles represent well the castle built by Maurice the Engineer, gifted to us by the son of William the Conqueror after his father did a genocide in the area.

The seahorses represent our long history as a maritime city. North Shields where the fish quay stands where fishermen would sail out never to return, has produced the songs: The Keel Row, Cushie Butterfield, When The Boat Comes In & the Longstaff brothers. Not to mention the importance of it being at the mouth of the Tyne River.

Where it says The Newcastle United, it once stated ‘Fortiter Defendit Triumphans’. The Latin for To Trumph by Brave Defence. A motto we gained after 300 Geordies held off 10,000 Scots and Mackems for a day when they sieged the city in 1644 during the Civil War.

Most of the people here were warriors then and over our entire history, fighting: Romans, Scots, Vikings and Normans. But we live in a time where our bishops no longer need to wield swords, but the vast majority of us while not being warriors are Newcastle United fans. It means something to us.

To change that is to change 2000 years of history.

That badge to me is like a symbol of a Geordie Library of Alexandria.

**** the digital age.

  1. I don’t understand why people are getting upset about it’s not like this is the original badge it’s the 4th version of our badge.
I guess people like to just show fake outrage these days.

  2. Cost has been listed as a reason for change.
So every IT development, adoption of computer aided stitching, and all the improvements in the textile industry are contributing to increased costs, really?
I’m for leaving it as it is.
Just because it’s the 4th version it doesn’t mean we need a 5th.

My point was not what number change it was it was that no one complained the 2 previous times it was change but this faux outrage age seems to be …well…. outraged for no reason what so ever

  4. I really could not care less about a badge as long as it benefits the club. Business is business if it makes it easier / cheaper to make shirts etc im all for it. Same as moving from St. James’ benefits the club great do it .
