Newcastle set Anthony Gordon price tag with two clubs interested – Report

Anthony Gordon has had a mixed bag of a season, summed up by his recent meetings with Arsenal.

On Sunday his body language was poor, as was his touch in the build up to Declan Rice’s winner, but he was outstanding in both semi-finals against the Gunners, scoring in both legs to help us reach the League Cup final.

Speculation around his future has generally gone quiet since a potential move to Liverpool was rumoured last June, although new reports have emerged this week on the possibility of him moving on this summer.

Gordon’s price with two clubs keen

Newcastle United are adamant that Anthony Gordon is going nowhere this summer, but it seems every player has a price in this day and age.

The Telegraph report that it would take ‘ridiculous money’ to sign the England winger, while Mark Douglas at the i has also been discussing Gordon’s future after a below-par performance at the Emirates on Sunday.

He reports that both Arsenal and Chelsea are interested in the 24-year-old, stating that Newcastle value the former Everton talent at around £80m.

Newcastle are not in a vulnerable position this summer, with our PSR position healthy and several key players under contract for several years. However, the i report that player trading is still likely to keep us ‘ahead of the curve’ from a PSR position and boost our spending power.

This line from Douglas’ piece does add to any potential uncertainty around Gordon’s future, however. ‘In recruitment circles, whispers around his future continue to circulate even if the official response is that Newcastle don’t want to sell and the player doesn’t want to leave.’

Gordon must step up on Sunday

Gordon hasn’t had a stinker of a season by any stretch, with nine goals and seven assists still a solid return considering his difficult summer and injury niggles in recent months.

However, considering the standards he set last term and the player’s own self belief, he hasn’t always done enough, whether that’s his lacklustre effort on Sunday, that stupid red card against Brighton or when he let the occasion get to him last October.

I do think some of the online criticism and reaction to his mistake at Arsenal has been over the top, especially as he played a huge role in getting us to the Carabao Cup final with superb performances in both semi-final legs against the Gunners.

But, with the stakes so high, we have to see a reaction from Gordon this weekend, where he’ll be up against his former club and more than likely a 39-year-old right-back in Ashley Young.

  1. You sometimes find when a player has a really good season, like Gordon did last season, following one is inconsistent, which Gordon had experienced this season. Fingers crossed he’s back to his best nxt season.

Agree with those sentiments, Almiron was not as good after his “flattering” season.
I would argue that Howe needs to share the load with Gordon and Barnes but only on the left flank as neither do themselves justice on the right which is an area we need to strengthen.
They are both talented individuals, the only issue I have with Gordon and for that matter Bruno is they both go to ground fat to easily looking for free kicks and the referees are getting wise to it. They both need to try and stay on their feet!

  3. I think there is no better LWF than Gordon when he is on his game.

My fear with him is as with Isak – they enjoy playing for NUFC but they play for their brand first imo.

Gordon would not thank you for sharing the load with Barnes – and he does not want to play RWF for the sake of the team – he will, but not with the same guile and tenacity as he does playing LWF – why?! – because Saka is nailed on RWF for England but the LWF position is up for grabs – and that’s his real motivation.

Isak enjoys playing for NUFC, but wants to be in the European elite – winning league titles & in the running for Bal’on Dors.

People keep referring to him as the best CF in Europe – but he’s not in contention for the big trophies and he’s not getting the wages of the European elite.

I’m not sure if it will be this summer, but it’s these 2 I expect to leave Newcastle first.

  6. ToonRme – I’m a Newcastle fan of over 35yrs and have seen enough clickbait & transfer rumours to know not to believe a word of them.

I base my opinion on what I see with my own eyes. I’m a huge fan of both players. They are exceptional talents and have give their all playing for NUFC.

But I’m also a realist. I think of the players we have, those 2 in particular see NUFC as a stepping stone club.

You talk about trophies with Arsenal & Chelsea and have a point – though I expect Chelsea are about to win a European Cup. Arsenal are regularly competing for the league and in the CL – BUT that’s trophies.

Newcastle are in the mix with them, and expect that to be the case for years to come – and that excites me as a Newcastle fan. But taking that out of the equation for a second – do you be in the mix with NUFC on £120k pw or to another club in the mix on £250k plus pw??.

Bruno is our highest paid player on the £160k pw – and we aren’t gonna break our wage structure.

So when it comes to negotiating Isaks new deal & we offer him £160k or even make him our highest paid player on £180-200k pw .. but Arsenal offer £250-300k – what do you think his advisors will be telling him?.

Believe me, nobody will be happier if he signs a new deal & stays next season. But do I believe he sees his career out at NUFC?!

  7. “every player has a price” – that may be true but seems this only applies when they play in black and white – funny how the best players at Liverpool/ManC/Chelsea are never pimped out by the media – does that mean they don’t have a price then!

One day the penny will actually drop with these clowns that NUFC are now a BUYING club!
