Newcastle interested in signing Brighton star - Report

Matheus Cunha looks set to join Man Utd, but it was reported earlier this month that Newcastle United were seriously interested in the Wolves star.

It’s thought Eddie Howe valued his ability to play in a number of roles, which may explain the latest transfer link that’s emerged today.

A fellow South American who has shown his versatility on the South Coast is now being looked at,  and it’s a familiar name who we’ve attempted to sign since the Saudi takeover.

Brighton star back on radar?

After very nearly signing from Watford almost three years ago, it looks like Newcastle United are back in the mix for Joao Pedro.

After news emerged that he's likely to leave Brighton this summer, journalist and talkSPORT commentator Ben Jacobs has revealed that Newcastle are in the mix for his signature along with at least one other Premier League club.

The Brazilian cost the Seagulls £30m back in 2023 and it's believed they will be looking to make a 'big profit' on the 23-year-old this summer, suggesting he won't come cheap.

In a post on X, Jacobs said: 'Newcastle and Liverpool have both shown an interest in Brighton striker João Pedro. Chelsea have not held any talks and are not exploring a deal.

'Pedro could leave this summer, but Brighton would be looking to make a big profit on the then-club record £30m they paid Watford.’

A good fit, but a little pricey?

Joao Pedro is clearly a player we like, ticking several boxes for Eddie Howe.

Big potential at 23, can play in a number of attacking positions - up front, out wide and comfortable dropping deep - and he’s also developed his physicality during his time at the Amex, filling out into his frame.

He’d be a superb addition to our squad, but the fee would almost certainly be in excess of £50m, it seems.

Can we afford to spend that when a specialist right winger, quality centre-back and top young goalkeeper is also wanted? I’m not so sure.
