Newcastle in talks with Callum Wilson after passing up on contract clause - David Ornstein

After five years and 49 Premier League goals, it’s looking like Sunday’s game against Everton is the final time we’ll see Callum Wilson play for Newcastle United - but an exit is not a total guarantee, it seems.

After a difficult season laden with injury and substitute cameos, our no.9 was given the opportunity to stand alone and show his appreciation for the Toon faithful packed inside the ground.

He shed a tear after waving to the Gallowgate, which felt like a sign he'll depart, but The Athletic's David Ornstein has issued an update on the striker's future on Monday.

Toon in Wilson talks

As revealed by The Athletic's David Ornstein just moments ago, Newcastle will NOT activate their option to extend Callum Wilson’s contract - but he could yet stay.

He reports that the club have now entered negotiations over a 'more incentive-based' deal, leaving it up to the 33-year-old to stay for one more season in a back-up role or pursue other offers should he leave as a free agent.

Wilson's post-match emotions hinted at an exit on Sunday, while many feel a younger and more reliable alternative will now be pursued, with Ipswich's Liam Delap thought to be in talks over a potential move having spoken to several suitors.

On the subject of strikers, Ornstein reports that Alexander Isak is going nowhere, with the Swede set to stay after the club secured Champions League football yesterday.

Howe on Wilson’s future

Howe offered some insight on the current status of Wilson’s contract, which comes to an end this summer, confirming talks would take place with his reps.

After the game, Howe told the media: "Let’s wait and see. We’re going to sit down and talk with his representatives.”

“What I can say is that Callum Wilson is, and has been, an incredible footballer for Newcastle. He’s someone who epitomises the spirit that has got us to where we are.”

“He’s professional, brave to come here and be the number nine in the manner and the moment he did, it was a difficult moment in the club’s history. The club needed hope, and Callum gave them hope. He dealt with the pressure and responsibility that role brings unbelievably well.”

“He brings a positivity to the group, he’s a leader within the changing room, he’s just been incredible. Let’s wait and see what happens, but it was great to see him have that relationship with the supporters. There’s still so much respect there between the two.”
