Early window worries at Newcastle United

Death, taxes and Newcastle United fans getting agitated about a transfer window.

It is just over two weeks since the Magpies confirmed their second Champions League campaign in three years, but the relief and satisfaction of that achievement has now given way to anxiety about the squad not being equiped for the season ahead.

Although it is a shame that there is no time afforded to reflect and bask in the glow of a cup win and a top five finish, there are a few good reasons for the feelings of unease currently permeating the fanbase.

Newcastle’s business for the last two years has been restricted and limited due to PSR, which evidently remains a challenge even if the inactivity of the previous three windows means the purse strings should be able to be loosened a bit. Ambition continues to be checked on non-‘big six’ clubs throughout the Premier League and it means clubs like Newcastle can ill afford transfer mistakes. They need to recruit well.

Related to this is the continuing free spending of rival clubs such as Manchester United and Chelsea, who have both agreed deals for attacking reinforcements early in the window, albeit Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap had release clauses which made those transfers more straightforward. Just because clubs are spending though doesn’t necessarily mean they are doing so effectively, and neither of those clubs should be looked upon with envy given the scant returns on their investment over the last few years. Liverpool are another club spending big, although last summer they too did very little in the way of incoming transfers.

Back on Tyneside, Paul Mitchell’s untimely departure raises questions about the executive structure at Newcastle and, most pressingly, about the direction of this current transfer window. Even if Mitchell was never a good fit and was too abrasive a character to work well with Eddie Howe, the optics of the most senior figure in the recruitment department leaving less than 12 months into the job and in the middle of a transfer window are not good.

Mitchell was heavily involved in last summer’s upheaval and the embarrassing failed pursuit for Marc Guehi. With those events still fresh in the minds of the Newcastle fanbase it adds more cause for concern this time around.

Howe himself actually fanned the flames of expectation and anticipation after the Everton game by saying the club needed to act quickly and emphasizing the size of the task this summer. It isn’t often he is so unequivocal and perhaps reflecting on that interview he may have chosen not to be so assertive, knowing that this is a fanbase that devours any morsel of information. Conversely, Howe is acutely aware that he is the man in the firing line if things go wrong next season, and he is under no illusions that to compete on four fronts again the squad needs injections of both quality and depth.

Underpinning all of this, and despite the success of the last three years, is some residual Mike Ashley PTSD. It is still hard to get away from the sense that Newcastle United and transfer windows just don’t get along. Miserable memories of Sky Sports News crossing to a lonely Keith Downie reporting from outside Darsley Park that Newcastle are ‘closed for business’ after failing to sign Hamza Choudhury on loan. Even going back to the summers of Lee Bowyer and Vurnon Anita where the Magpies should have kicked on from a position of strength and instead stood still to go backwards.

The event that appeared to tip an already fretful online fanbase into a full-blown panic attack was the retained list, which indicated that the Magpies had re-signed Mark Gillespie for a year and are negotiating new deals with John Ruddy and Callum Wilson. Predictable tropes that Howe is too sentimental and not ruthless enough were supplemented by wilder and demonstrably false takes that Howe only wants to sign British players and that PIF have lost interest. That the hierarchy lack ambition.

Taking the goalkeepers first, clearly neither of them are going to play first-team football for Newcastle, but they are valued by Howe for their professionalism and role within the squad. It is entirely probable (and arguably desirable) that Dubravka and Vlachodimos both leave, which would make Ruddy third choice assuming the club sign a new goalkeeper as appears likely. There is no risk attached to giving Ruddy and Gillespie extensions.

Nobody would argue that Callum Wilson’s last two seasons have gone to plan, and this would appear to be a logical time for him to continue his career elsewhere, but there are a few reasons why Newcastle might want to retain him (on a contract with a reduced wage on an appearance incentivised contract).

Strikers are enormously expensive, and Newcastle have the additional complication that signing one good enough to deputise for Isak but who is content to start most games on the bench is not an easy task. It’s clear that priority positions are right-wing / forward and centre-back. To buy players good enough to enhance the first team is going to cost a lot of money. Wilson signing for another year could kick the striker can down the road for 12 months and allow funds to be diverted, particularly if Howe thinks Osula is ready for more game time next season. It could also be the case that the club and Wilson know he is going, but he asked them not to announce it now while he negotiates with other prospective employers. His emotional goodbye on the pitch after the Everton game would certainly indicate that a parting of the ways is on the cards.

This ultimately boils down to trust and faith in Eddie Howe and his decision making. He won’t get everything right all the time, but if he sees value in retaining some senior squad players on deals with negligible risk then his judgement can surely be respected in the knowledge that he will have weighed up the pros and cons with the full context in mind (context which is not always readily apparent to supporters).

The obvious counter to all of the above concerns about the current direction of Newcastle United is that the transfer window opened less than two weeks ago. There are still almost four weeks until pre-season training starts, another six weeks on top of that until the season starts, and two more weeks after the first ball is kicked until the window closes. Admittedly the same was said throughout last summer, but there were the mitigating financial and staffing factors which contributed to what was undeniably a bad transfer window in summer 2024. None of that stopped the greatest season in living memory for most fans.

Most of Newcastle’s big transfers over the last three years have come between late June and August, and generally news of those transfers has only broken in the media when the deal was all but signed, sealed and delivered. It is beyond doubt that the club are working hard behind the scenes to strengthen the squad, and they are likely waiting for some other moves to kick-start the market. One of the unintended consequences of PSR and the wealth of the Premier League is that most clubs are under no pressure to sell their key assets and can name their price. This means negotiations are likely to be more protracted and drawn out, particularly while there is still months of the window to go and it is in clubs’ and agents’ interests to drive for the highest price possible.

We live in a world of instant gratification, and football fans are not good at patience, but we have no choice for now but to trust our manager and have faith that the ownership that has transformed our club will do what needs to be done and get it right in the transfer market again as they have before.

HWTL!

  1. Simply howe doesn’t have a clue about recurring…he olny wants epl players…this guy even contemplating giving Wilson a new contract..that’s not a quality manager he is just stubborn and doesn’t have a clue about Europe Leagues ..

  2. I would bet he wouldn’t even know bastoni or literally any players in the top 5 leagues…he will get the sack by September…I hope ..he’s more made for a team that only recruit from England…

Eddie Howe literally spoke at length about watching a lot of Sandro Tonali before bringing him to Newcastle. He was also more than happy to sign Isak from Spain, and Bruno/Botman from France.

This idea that Howe won’t get anyone from outside England is odd, and also makes a mockery of his football IQ as a manager.

  4. Howe has an emphasis on prem players currently all the targets are over priced prem players .. Mitchell felt that scouting was not up to scratch and he maybe he was right as we are not being linked with a host of equally good and often cheaper players in Europe ., the fact we got botman guimares and issak a few years ago shows there is quality and good prices to be garnered

  7. I know the transfer window is closed for the CWC (nonsense 🙄)

But that doesn’t stop us negotiating for players – and especially those out of contract. Just looking at those still available:

Jonathan David is the absolute obvious one – though the fact he’s still a free agent suggests that his demands might be difficult.

Angel Gomes is a midfielder I like a lot. If we were to raise money by selling Willock & Longstaff then Gomes on a free could work. The issue would be I think he walks into other midfields where with us he’d struggle to shift our 3 – he’d have to be prepared to be a squad player with us.

Tyrick Mitchell would be perfect as an upgrade to Targett imo. He’s only 25 so would be good for the next 5 years. Hall was excellent last season but it’s still a position we need cover for and this lad ticks all the boxes for me.

Kyle Walker Peters is another who would be a player that would strengthen our squad imo. He would allow us to move on an ageing Trippier and is unquestionably better than Krafth. He’s also a player that can play both RB and LB – he’d be perfect for a squad competing on 4 fronts.

Lastly, and not a name that would jump out tomorrow most but CJ Egan-Riley.
He’s a 22 year old RCB brought through the City ranks who spent last season on loan at Burnley. He’s also played 41 games in a rock solid defence – albeit in the Championship.
I’d be signing him to replace Lascelles to develop him this season and take Schars squad place next season – I would still be signing a first teamer this summer.

We have Lascelles, Schar and Burn all over 30 – so replacing Lascelles with CJ would be the first steps to addressing an ageing back line.

  8. My squad for next season would look like this if I had my way:

    GK – TRAFFORD, Dubravka
    RB – Tino, WALKER PETERS
    LB – Hall, MITCHELL
RCB – Schar, GUEHI (GJ Egan-Riley)
    LCB – Botman, Burn
MF – Bruno, Tonali, Joelinton, Miley, GOMES, MCATEE
    LWF – Gordon, Barnes
    RWF – ELANGA, Murphy
    CF – Isak, DAVID

Osula, Krafth would make up the 25 man squad (although due to his age I don’t think Miley would need to
    be officially named).

    Trafford £30m
    Guehi £50m
    McAtee £25m
    Elanga £60m

    Total £165m

    Sell

    Pope £10m
    Lascelles £3m
    Trippier £5m
    Targett £5m
    Willock – £15m
    Longstaff – £10m

    Totalling around £40-50m

That should keep us good with PSR.

However, wages COULD be the issue.

  9. I’d rather have Tomori or Diomande in defence than Guehi I think. We also have Alex Murphy.
Right wing forward, perhaps Semenyo, Kudus, Dybling?
Midfield, mcAtee or the Villa lad, (cannot remember his name) if Joe Willock moves on.
Striker, David would be ideal, or Joao Pedro perhaps, but we were previously interested in Feran Torres? Possible?

All our previous decent signings came out of left field without many links until a medical was booked. Trust the guys who buy!

      (Quote)

  10. Kim – I just saw that this morning – no way!! £30m is too much imo.
Apparently it’s due to their being a 20% sell on for City – no way he’s £40m like.

      (Quote)

  11. Gilly – I’d be happy enough with Tomori too mate. I think he’s decent but it seems Howe wants Guehi. If we can get Guehi at a fair price then I think he’s a great fit. He’s only 24 – plays in a back 3 for Palace and back 4 for England. Hes a captain and leader for Palace so great for the squad & is obvious already playing in the league now – which is an advantage over Tomori imo. He was way overpriced at £70-80m or whatever they were wanting last summer but if we could get him for £40-50m then I think that’s a good buy.

I like Elanga for the RWF position. I think he’s decent could link well with Isak and form at Swedish connection.
I don’t dislike the other players you mentioned but the price suggested for Kudus is crazy money imo.
Wouldn’t touch Dybling – he’s proven nothing yet.

If I’m being critical of my midfield picks it’s that I probably need another enforcer rather than Gomes and McAtee.

I’m a big fan of Pedro. I wanted him before he went to Brighton – but if the fee is as reported in the region of £70m then not a chance!!.

It would be either David or Ferguson for me – loan to buy Ferguson ideally. But only Ferguson if Howe is happy Osula is a option to cover Isak too.

      (Quote)

  12. I think Gomes is off to another team. I mean we are all just guessing aren’t we? Lol!
I see Osula score the winner for Denmark U21s this evening, came off the bench! Good for him! Tino hopefully in action for England U21s tonight.

If we really want a player, e.g. Trafford, I wonder at what point we would walk away and see him go elsewhere? Would we pay £40million? He’s not worth that but I wonder if we’ll still go for him… time will tell.

      (Quote)

  13. I’d be happy with both Elanga and Pedro too! I’d also be fine with Semenyo. It may end up being someone out of left field that we have not been linked with yet.

      (Quote)

  14. Gilly – Osula only got about 20mins tonight as well.

Denmark had some decent young uns to be fair – the lad Bischoff who came on as well was decent – though another LWF like.

Tino playing & McAtee the captain – I do like him mind – I think he’d be a great addition to give a different type of option in the final 3rd.

      (Quote)

  15. Osula got an assist for their second as well apparently!

I see McAtee is playing up front as a centre forward! Didn’t realise he could play there. Be interesting to see how he does.

      (Quote)

  16. Good first half for England. Showed more in the first ten minutes than our first team did in 90. Tino looks good!

      (Quote)

  17. Gilly – I think the u21 will be winging it a bit. Liam Delap would have been CF but Chelsea obviously signed him for the CWC.

Thought Tino did well in the first half & I think McAtee is tidy on the ball – seems to know what’s round him and picks a good pass.

      (Quote)

  18. Strange, I keep getting errors when I try to post

Was trying to say, Hutchinson from Ipswich looks canny too!

      (Quote)

  19. Gilly – I’m not sure how much game time he’ll get but keep an eye on Hayden Hackney mate. He plays for Boro at the moment, but is a good midfield enforcer – might struggle for game time coz of Anderson though

      (Quote)

  20. I posted this earlier.
So in goal Trafford appears to be the target but Anatoliy Trubin from Benfica is 23 and according to TM £25m.
Similarly we seem to think Marc Guéhi of Crystal Palace is our young partner for Botman, he’s 24 and TM value him at £45m but Ousmane Diomande from Sporting Lisbon is younger, 21 cheaper £40m and better. Nice to see him getting a mention.
Up front Evann Guessand from Nice is a versatile right winger, only 23 and value at £25m. He is just as happy playing CF. He’s a lot better fit than Elanga who prefers the left anyway.
If we still want a specialist CF then Lorenzo Lucca from Udinese is 6′ 7″ tall, 24 years old, £22m according to TM and plays a lot more than just a tall target man, giving us an alternative to 6′ 3″ Osula. I had thought about Mika Biereth from Monaco who is 22 and valued at £30m but I think Nick Woltemade 23 from Stuttgart is more of a Joao Pedro alternative at £30m.
Which brings us to the midfield. Our first choice three is pretty set and with Miley available we have four good CMs. If Willock or Longstaff go then they need replacing. So I’ve found a Defensive mid and an Attacking mid. Mateus Fernandes from Southampton and Nico Paz from Como who at 20 is £35m.
So, GK Trubin, RCB Diomande, DM Ferandes, AM Paz, RW Guessand and CF Lucca for a grand total of £162m according to TM.

      (Quote)

  21. Prem – you’ve always had a better grip on the foreign league and come up with names that I’ve not even heard of mate, so I trust you.

I like that Diomande is getting mentioned too – he was mentioned with Palace too but they now being linked with Kelly 😳.

Pedro apparently now doesn’t want a Newcastle move but it’s quoted £70m anyway so no chance at that price.

I also think Saints will want more for Fernandez too mate – they never sell cheap.

      (Quote)

  22. Yeh, I know I’m using TM prices which are always a bit low, but they use Euros so I just use the same number in GBP but I still reckon an extra 10 – 20% is reasoanable.

It’s simply what anyone does at stage one. Scour databases with certain criteria. Age, club, league etc. Whether they fit the system or have the personality is where you move from a long list to a short list, which is what scouts are for. But I’m discarding those that are unrealistic, i hope.

They are really just outlier suggestions that are perhaps worth a shout.

      (Quote)

  23. Ice – he’s quality mate!! But if Palace were wanting £70m for Guehi last summer – how much do you think they’ll value Eze??? 😳🤑

      (Quote)

  24. So Angel Gomes and CJ Egan-Riley have both joined Marseille a free – joining Jonathan Rowe – another young Englishman already playing there?!.

That’s 3 English players all under 25 playing out in Marseille and it’s cost a grand total of £14m (the fee for Rowe).

I’m not necessarily saying NUFC should be buying them – but with Bellingham choosing to go to German instead of playing in the PL – I wonder why it is that so many young British players are leaving to play abroad?.

Do we need to change our squad set up to be more like other leagues – where they restrict the number of foreign players allowed in the squad?.

      (Quote)

  25. SHARPY I would pay 70mil no problem, look what L/pool have payed for a striker £120 plus and imo Eve is a lot better player and is used to the PL which is a big plus

      (Quote)

  26. Ice – I would as well mate. Brighton are on about £70m for Pedro – no. Forest are on about £50m for Elanga – I’d go no higher than £55m.

But I think Palace will want more than £70m for Eze. With Lpool paying what they did for Wirtz I think Palace will value Eze a similar price – and I’d find it difficult to argue to be fair.

      (Quote)

  27. Prem – not sure on that one mate. Diarra is probably a rarity in the grand scheme of things.

If they bring that in they should also be forced into a rule that allows clubs to buy out a contract too – coz how many other jobs does someone who is under performing get to continue their employment at tens of thousands of pounds a week.

There are a lot more players sat on contracts refusing to leave coz they won’t get the same salary on the move, than there are players being held against their will.

      (Quote)

  28. But if they are sat waiting out a contract then buying it out by club means they end up with the same money and are now free agents.

      (Quote)

  29. Prem – sorry for the delay mate. Fair point but I don’t know the answer then – wage caps?.

Wage caps subsidised by hefty bonuses – but then I guess how do you calculate costs based on how a squad of players may or may not perform?!.

Do we change the whole set up and introduce a draft system like the NFL? – I don’t see that happening either.

I think they need to do something coz I think football is at breaking point in its current form.

      (Quote)

  30. I can see the shift to a contractual basis. The problem is that it would take five years for current contracts to expire, and the industry’s wealth would shift further into the hands of the successful players.

      (Quote)

  31. Prem – I have no real issue with the most successful players getting the rewards – it’s the amount of bang average players training in silk slippers that bothers me.

I understand that’s down to a negotiation between club & player and the clubs knowingly and willingly agree that amount so they get punished for their mistakes.

I just have a real problem with it all. It has went from wages being high because it’s a short lived career and players wanted to secure their futures (which I had no issue with) to now players are making enough money to buy football clubs when they finish playing.

There’s also the additional income of sponsorship deals – but that’s obviously something the player & agents sort.

I’d be all for a basic wage cap of say £150k a week with the club able to negotiate bonuses on top of that – which could be renegotiated annually.

Because ultimately the costs filter through to the fans – whether that is ticket prices, replica clothing prices or the televised costs to watch our teams play.

  32. I think there is a transfer deadline that we are waiting to pass. The 30th June one. The end of one financial period and on 1st July the start of another one. I don’t think we can spend a whole lot until 1st July. I think we are waiting to see what fire sales there are as 30th June gets closer. I reckon we have around 30m we could spend before 30th June. Once 1st July comes around, that’s when you will se us make the serious moves.

      (Quote)

  33. Agreed that £30m is being kept as a bargaining tool for clubs with PSR problems such as Villa. They have a couple of players in their prime and several young players who could become available at a reasonable price if they need to sell. Few other clubs in similar dilemmas.

      (Quote)

  34. Need to sign players that improve the team. Not for the sake of it or strength in numbers. We’ve got three right backs , and three left backs. Obviously need a central defender . 4 goalkeepers already?
We need Another top draw forward. Not a second fiddle. Injuries tactics taken into consideration. ( by the way not one journalist has mentioned how unhappy Delap would be if Chelsea sign Pedro as he apparently only signed to be number 1 striker)
Another midfielder would be canny and a couple of those under the radar transfers like Burn and Trippier that don’t cost an arm and a leg but bring top class talent. Wouldn’t let either go anywhere.
Osula could be the real deal if he gets a run.

      (Quote)

  35. The little birdy, I have high hopes for Osula too , think he’s going to be first class in time.

  36. It’s incredible how Bournemouth and Brighton seem to find amazing players and buy them for little money, then manage to sell them on for huge fees! We need to find a way to do this too. That is the best way around these ridiculous financial rules …

PSG want Zabarnyii. Bournemouth paid about £20million and have just turned down £55 million from PSG for him … 🤷🏻‍♂️.

      (Quote)

  37. I guess we’ve also done that but perhaps not to such a huge extent with Tonali, Hall, Livramento and Isak … we have to find more gems like them, rather that ready made expensive prem players.

  40. That German laddie, Woltermade looks quite some player! Seems to play on the right too!

What a mental game this Germany Italy match is. Italy trying to defend a 1-0 lead against a team like Germany, lose the lead then go down 2-1, lose their heads and stupidly go down to 9 men, then equalise with a stunning free kick in the last minute to go to extra time,… with 9 men! 😳😳😳

They were excellent tonight – so calm and controlled and to make a final having lost so many players from the squad just before the tournament start – brilliant.

Agree Gilly – Hutchinson looks good, but McAtee and Elliott for me again tonight.

Chuffed for Tino but it’s gutting to see how good Anderson is playing – what a player to lose ☹️.

Like Beadle as well – quality young keeper.

      (Quote)

  48. Agree with everything there Sharpy. We were briefly linked with Elliott. He’s a fantastic player. Either him or McAtee would be an immense upgrade on Longstaff or Willock.

In thoroughly enjoying this U21 tournament actually. Refreshing to see good attacking football. Much better than the first teams imo!

But the player that has stood out most for me this tournament – Will Osula.

Even starting the tournament on the bench, he stayed positive and when he got his chance he really showed what he’s all about.

He’s still a bit rough round the edges but no way would I be sending him out on loan next season. I think keep him close coz he will get more game time next season – even if he’s our Carabao and FA Cup forward or RWF.

The U19s and U21s will have finished by then and the CWC will be in its latter stages so players and agents will start looking to get moves going.

    That’s my hope anyway.

It would be good to have our backroom staff sorted by then too 😡.

  56. It hasn’t stopped the likes of Liverpool, manure and Chelsea though, a few other clubs too. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  57. Gilly Toon:
Agreed on Osula. Next season will be immense for him. Make or break. We must keep him and play him.

would love to see him and Woltamde up top in a 4-4-2
I’ve a strong feeling we will see Trafford in soon, then it will be interesting to see who goes from our huge current crop of goalies.

Try that again. I would like to see him and Woltemade up front in a 4-4-2

  59. I think that would be quite a potent strike force mate. Cannot see us getting him though!
