Osula drops Newcastle hint alongside Denmark boss after EURO U21 heroics

The ongoing U-21 EUROs has been the platform that Will Osula has been crying out for ever since joining Newcastle United.

With three goals and an assist across 91 minutes of Denmark’s opening two games, his side have qualified for the knockout rounds and he’s a serious contender for player of the tournament so far.

We’ve seen flashes of the youngster’s potential at times in his Toon career, particularly in cup fixtures and for his maiden league goal against Ipswich Town.

Heading into next season, where he can potentially force himself into the backup striker conversation, Osula and the Danish U-21s manager have each came out and expressed just how much he needs regular game time to showcase just what he can do.

Osula and Højer's message to Howe

Will Osula and Denmark U21 boss Steffen Højer have both hinted that Eddie Howe must offer the 21-year-old more game time next season.

Denmark U21s manager Steffen Højer dropped him from their squad for November and March’s international breaks, possible due to a lack of minutes, before recalling him for the U21 EUROs, and his decision’s been rewarded with Osula’s match winning heroics so far in the group stage.

Reflecting on his lack of game time during an interview with Bold, Osula wishes he could be given more opportunities for his club after impressing for his country, offering an early plea to Howe ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

“I just need playing time to show what I can do. It means something to me. I already know…Only myself and my father know what I can do.”

“When playing time comes, everyone will see what I can do on the pitch.”

Højer shares Osula’s sentiment, feeling that a player of Osula’s talent and recent goalscoring more than warrants a chance to gain more minutes in the Premier League, feeling he "plays too little" for people to see his true ability:

“I think I’ve mentioned the potential many times, and it’s because he plays too little for people to discover him," said the Danish U-21 boss.

“But against Holland you got a little bit of it. On this team he’s been good, and he’s scored a lot of goals. He has the speed he has, and he’s not easy for the others to handle.

"It’s quite impressive what he goes in and does, when you think about what he came with.”

Osula is on the bench for Denmark's final group game against Finland U21s at 5pm, although Hojer has rested a number of key players now they've already booked their spot in the last eight.

Loan move off the cards?

With the club actively looking for extra firepower in attack, and there still being a chance Callum Wilson stays at the club, there had been talk of a loan move for the 6ft 4' forward just a few months ago.

However, it looks like those plans have changed, with The Mail reporting last month that he will be part of Eddie Howe's squad next season as he prepare to compete on four fronts.

After impressing in training, promising cameo appearances towards the end of the season, and clearly integrating well with the squad off the pitch, Osula is clearly valued at St James’ Park after his £10m move from Sheffield United.

His immediate short term future does still depend on if the club can pull off the signing of Joao Pedro, who would no doubt become the club’s no.2 option behind Alexander Isak.

But with how much we will want to focus on another push for top five and a deep Champions League run, Osula will be nothing short of a necessity in the Carabao and FA Cups: let’s hope he can show there what he’s shown so far in the EUROs.
