TalkSPORT: Newcastle interested in signing England Under-21 star - £40m deal on offer

In recent seasons, Newcastle’s recruitment and eye for both domestic and international talent has been impressive, even if signing have been few and far between of late.

Bringing international stars like Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali alongside big domestic names like Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento has left the fanbase instilling a lot of faith in Eddie Howe and his team in picking out the perfect players to join the squad.

Failed bids to sign Joao Pedro and Liam Delap has seen us struggle to attract domestic options in the opening month of the summer window, leaving some to question if it's time to shop overseas.

However, a new report suggests Howe has another Premier League target in mind who ticks a few boxes as a young, versatile attacking talent...

Newcastle keen on Young Lions star?

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle United are interested in signing Liverpool talent Harvey Elliott, who is set to be available for £40m this summer.

Having just been named the Player of the Tournament at the U-21 EUROs with five goals, following in the footsteps of 2023 winner Anthony Gordon, Elliot’s attracting suitors across Europe.

Alongside ourselves, RB Leipzig have also been touted as a potential destination for Elliot, with the Bundesliga becoming a more common destination for English talents to gain regular minutes at a high level.

With how packed the Liverpool midfield is, Florian Wirtz is another player who will leapfrog Elliot in the hierarchy, so it’s no surprise that the 22-year-old is keen to find consistent first team football elsewhere.

Former boss Jurgen Klopp recently expressed his regret about not playing him more often during his time at Anfield, and now works as RB Leipzig's 'Head of Global Soccer', which could strengthen their hopes of striking a deal given his strong relationships on Merseyside.

There has been talk that a £40m deal for Elliot would have a significant sell-on clause included within, whilst an offer closer to £50m would likely remove that clause or reduce it at the very least.

Potential Liverpool problems

With how much Liverpool have been linked with Alexander Isak over the past month, it would come as no surprise if Arne Slot’s side were to offer Elliot in negotiations.

Similar to how our interest in Jarrel Quansah and Joe Gomez almost saw Anthony Gordon head to Anfield in a swap deal, could we see something similar being discussed before the start of next season?

Of course, we value Isak as perhaps the club’s biggest asset, and it would take a seismic fee on top of Elliot to even get a conversation started, never mind strike a deal.

There’s also the issue of Elliot’s position. He can play down the right and has done at different stages of his young career, but does he fit into our system in that role?
