Newcastle could hijack €25m move for AC Milan star after transfer U-turn – Report

Whilst most of the headlines this window have been about Newcastle United missing out on their first choice of attacking targets, less has been said about the club’s pursuit of defensive options as well.

Having missed out on Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid, and having reportedly cooled our interest Marc Guehi as Liverpool close in, some have wondered if we’ll turn back to previous targets currently playing in  Europe.

Widely expected to depart his current club in the coming weeks, a familiar name who we reported Newcastle’s interest in last summer could be back on the agenda…

AC Milan defender back on the menu?

According to reports in Italy, Newcastle United are considering a move for AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.

Thiaw had looked all set to join Cesc Fabregas’s Como, but in a dramatic U-turn, he has now rejected the up-and-coming Serie A side.

Como had agreed a fee in the region of €25m, but Italian journalist Matteo Moretto now reports that the German “wants to play in Europe” and could be back on Newcastle’s radar after long-term interest.

Moretto said: “Malick Thiaw wants to play in Europe. Keep an eye on Newcastle– they are considering the situation.”

“The player is still rejecting Como. He will not accept personal terms, despite a €25m (£21.6m) agreement between the clubs.”

The right option at the right time?

Whilst there is always speculation to be had with ourselves and reports in the Italian media, a move for Thiaw may be just what the club needs right now.

Thiaw ticks a lot of boxes as a young, athletic, right-sided centre-back who has Champions League experience, impressing against Newcastle in our 0-0 draw at the San Siro and against Spurs in a previous campaign.

With fans clamouring for some transfer activity, the club may be foolish to turn down a player of Thiaw’s promise at such a bargain price, especially when we can offer the European football; unlike  Milan who finished outside the top six last season.

  1. It’d be nice if it was us hijacking someone else’s transfer rather than the other way round! I think this would be excellent business for the money, but I wonder if Eddie’s looking for a quicker more agile centre back to complement Botman long term. Is Thiaw too similar to Botman? I haven’t seen enough of him to know, personally. Still, we could do a lot worse!

  2. For crying out loud, why don’t we just go and buy Scalvini? 21yrs old experienced serie A and in the Champions League.
We need to stop dawdling and strike while the iron is hot!!!
