Newcastle on verge of £55m breakthrough – Breaking news on Thursday night

Some big claims have emerged on Thursday night, suggesting a breakthrough on the transfer front is almost here.

Fabrizio Romano kicked it off just moments ago, revealing that Newcastle have now launched an improved offer for Anthony Elanga worth £55m.

This comes after our £45m offer was rejected by Nottingham Forest last Tuesday, with Romano adding that Newcastle are now ‘pushing to get it done’ following ongoing negotiations with the East Midlands club.

However, some even stronger claims have followed from The Mail’s North East reporter Craig Hope, who reports that Newcastle are ‘on the verge of agreeing a deal.’

Not only has he confirmed that a follow-up offer of £55m has been submitted, Hope states that ‘significant progress’ has been made during talks, seeing us close in on the 23-year-old as discussions continue into Thursday night.

Personal terms are not thought to be an issue and Eddie Howe is a huge admirer of the Swedish international after attempting to sign the former Man Utd talent last summer.

The boss believes he can take his game to the next level on Tyneside, but is already a big fan of his electric pace and output, having bagged six goals and 11 assists last season.

  1. Could be a quality signing for us, let’s hope it’s true. It does worry me slightly that the four wingers competing for the two starting positions will all be right footed. Does it make us a bit predictable?

Regardless, he’s a good player with room to improve and a high ceiling. Plenty to be optimistic about with this one, pity Man Ure will see a cut of the fee if it happens.

Seems an awful lot of money, I hope he is worth it,,🙏🙏🙏

It’s absolutely the going rate for proven PL players. Esp young ones, especially as Eddie will improve him further. Less than mbeumo and cunha and 3 yrs younger ish. He will be their level or better by then. If it’s 55m it’s a fair price for me. Hope it happens, I think him and Trafford will be top class so fingers crossed for both

  3. Elanga is a good player who will do well for the club although my only concern would be his ceiling going forward.
Javi Symonds is a player who you could be doubling your money on 18 months down the line, could the same be said about Elanga?
It is hard to say at this stage with him but I am not against his signing.

  4. This will be an excellent signing for two reasons, in priority order:

    1. Murphy will not give up his spot. One of the hardest working players, part of the leadership group and off the back of a top season will bust himself in pre season to lay a marker down. He will push Elanga all day long. Whoever is ‘coming off the bench’ on the right will make an impact. Something we’ve missed for a while.

    2. Elanga is class. His ceiling is very high. This is the money he should, and will, cost us. Under Eddie, he will only get better. He will be happy at NUFC. Watch him outshine Mbeumo in the next two seasons.
